|
|
So there I was, innocently emerging gnome 2.2 and browsing with Konqueror (kde 3.1) when all of the sudden, my mouse cursor disappeared! nowhere to be found on the screen.
What's more, when the screensaver kicked in, moving the mouse didn't stop it, only the keyboard.
This is a logitech 2 button USB mouse attached with my keyboard. I'm kinda afraid to unplug it and possibly bring down X - is there a way to get the mouse back without rebooting?
Thanks,
T |

Well I'd try unplugging it and plugging it back in, but maybe I'm just adventurous . Also have a look at your kernel log to see if there are any usb related messages. You could also see if the problem still occurs when you plug it directly into the computer. |

maybe if you switch to a console and then unplug and plug in the mouse you wouldnt have to worry about X since X would have to give up the mouse and then grab it again when you came back into it. |

ok, I'll check it out tomorrow morning and see what I can find.
It happened again in gnome - the mouse froze over the applications menu. I had to keyboard-shortcut it over to a terminal to reboot. |

ok, it happened again, during another emerge. It seems to happen when the system is under heavy loads (i.e. an emerge...). dmesg shows the following:
Code: |
NVRM: AGPART: unable to retrieve symbol table
NVRM: AGPART: unable to retrieve symbol table
NVRM: AGPART: unable to retrieve symbol table
NVRM: AGPART: unable to retrieve symbol table
|
Does this have any relevance? |

well, unplugging/replugging it doesn't seem to work, either in to the keyboard or to the computer itself. Nothing else seems affected.
However, I did the following:
cd /dev/input
cat mouse0
both before and after unplugging and replugging it in, and nothing shows up - I'm guessing if things are working I should see some garbage appear as I move the mouse.
Does this mean the USB part of the OS needs to be prodded, poked or restarted in some way? Is this an X level problem or a kernel level prob?
(never happened in OS X <grumble> ) |

on further inspection, if I cat mouse1 instead of mouse0, I see the characters corresponding to mouse movement.
Does this mean that the kernel/X is not seeing mouse0, and that it has somehow crashed? is there a way to "restart" mouse0? |
