I prefer Evolution. It's simple, easy to use, and does everything that I need.

Why, it does support Unicode. You just need to compile it with libjconv. From http://sylpheed.good-day.net/:

Supports many code sets, including UTF-8 (Unicode), on using libjconv

Hey, it's written by a Japanese

I've been using Evolution for a while and have been very pleased with it. VFolders are really quite useful.

I tried mahogany and kmail but found them to be too slow for my tastes. Plus, I've found that Evolution has much better IMAP handling than KMail does.

Before I've abondoned non-web clients I've used either Netscape mail client or Xemacs VM mode. I still use Xemacs VM in emergency cases, when I need some extra intelligence from the client (like custom build filters written on elisp).

After I've moved my mail completely to the web but before I moved to Gentoo I used Squirrel Mail, which is one of the best web-mail clients with many features out the box, with many plans for new features, with good rate of new feature development, and it's very stable yet.

The main reason of my choice was in the fact that it's a web based. I work with it from virtually any computer all over the world without even thinking to synchronize my mail folders, address book, bookmarks or just simple notes - they are all in the same place where am I. The software is very customizable. If want I can change color highlight logic rules (and I did), default column set (and I did), structure of the addressbook (and I did), and many other things.

Another reason was that it was the easiest to install web mail package on Redhat system.

Now I am evaluating SqWebMail from Courier package. I've checked mostly basic functions and found that it works. Next I'll check how I can reconfigure all details for my own needs.

KMail. I haven't noticed it being slow at all as some people have been saying, and it does exactly what it wants from an email program, plus some more, but not as much more as evolution. I tried it and in addition to it being really unstable for me, I do want html in my email, a nice gui and support for whatever protocols I need but I don't want an Outlook clone. I had Outlook when I used Windows and preferred Netscape, Eudora or Mulberry or even web based e-mail to outlook.

Also someone previously mentioned that KMail lacked pgp support but there is a way to do this now, though it may be 3.1 only and it isn't just turning a simple option on in Configure KMail if I remember correctly.

Hi, just emerged sylpheed ... looks very good, but there's one thing that I'm missing :

I can't assign an address group to a filter.

e.g. : if it comes from te group spam, kick it...

also emerged sylpheed-claws because it's supposed to have a lot more filtering capabilities... which it does, but I still can't assign a group to a filter. I think it's extremely annoying to put every new email address in a filter, instead of just assigning it to an address group.

Did I miss something? or is this possible with another email client?

ok so i have an XP partition that uses netscape mail 4.7 (i think 4.7). if i install netscape mail and copy my inbox from the NTFS partition to a shared FAT32 partition, is there a way that i can have both windows netscape and linux netscape share all the same email information (so i can keep all my ins and outs in one place and not have to reboot into windows just to find an email that i have sent in the past...or vice versa)

For those who like a GUI my favourite is Evolution (turn off the shortcut bar and use the folder bar for a slightly less Outlook look) but for me I prefer mutt it's powerfull, fast and lets me type email with vim :D (if only we could write posts to this forum in vim ;)). Also this allows me to access my mail from university via ssh (using putty on a win 2000 box).

As I've been reading through this thread I more and more wondered when someone would say something like dmitrio

once you've become used to emacs, you can't get away from it.

how come when i go to emerge evolution (right now im using kmail, but would like a calendar/datebook feature similar to what evo offers) it has to install like 20 different packages? right now i have kde and flux both installed, and use primarily flux. is all this gnome stuff its installing going to suck up alot of disk space? if so, alternatives?

Outlook Express! Rock on!!

;)

Mutt for the console, very powerfull client - I love it.

As for gui client, I'm not sure... Evolution is nice, but i'd use sylpheed if it was ported to GTK2.

And for the console telnet is a great thing

Hi everyone, I have a Linux / Windows box.
On the windows partition I have a folder for my local Mozilla Mail (D:\Documents\Mozilla Mail\)
I want to import this to my Local Mail in Mozilla, so I type in:
/mnt/data/Documents/Mozilla\ Mail
But the mail isn't imported
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks in advance
