Yes yet people send stuff there, it's my msn messenger sign on as well. And no, don't tell me to use jabber....and yes I know there are msn gateways. I don't think you can even file transfer that way. There is no harm in having one...

I normally use gotmail and fetchyahoo for sending the mails into my mailservers procmail-chain.
So they run through the spam checks as usually (why don't I send them to the spamfolder alltogether?)

Correct me if I am wrong, but MS has disabled client program access to hotmail because too many spammers were using it. Long standing and non-abusive hotmail users were allowed to retain that right, but new users are not allowed.

That's right. gotmail however simply "clicks" through the links to get new mail and attachments. Spamming is not possible you cant' send email with it.

Is there an e-mail client in portage that can do hotmail and gmail accounts and can be compiled as amd64?

I strongly recommend freepops for fetching email from web-based mail accounts, it's in portage and afaik works with every known web-based email provider.

Gmail has a pop3 server so you don't need any third party program to fetch email from it.

Best,
Luca

It doesn't get any better than Thunderbird.

Good luck.

ebuild? :)

I use mostly squirrelmail, mutt, sometimes balsa and evolution, but I have also kmail, sylpheed, pine, elm configured for /var/spool/mail/$USER :)

The combination grep/less/telnet hasn't been mentioned yet. It uses less bandwidth than mutt in some cases :)
