Is there a package for news submission similar to that of slashdot? A user cliks a link, it gets formatted, and dynamically added to a text file?

I suppose it would be easy enough to write one, but I'm lazy.

If such a thing doesn't exist, I guess I will just write it.

Thanks!

Although I have no idea what you mean by that last sentence, why don't you just use slashdot ?
Or squishdot, or whatever - there's dozens.

The last sentence means - if there is no such news submission program, then I'd just write one. Code it up, and use it.

Anyway, I didn't know what it was called. slashdot, or squishdot eh? Cool, I'll check those out. Thanks!!

Erm.. no, it actually can't mean that - that's why I asked.

The two question/statements are not compatible, to abuse a computer term.

- Is there a package that does what Slashdot does ?
Yes, of course - it's what Slashdot runs on.
- Is there a package that goes click, format, add ?
I'm sure there is, but that has nothing to do with Slashdot - either the site or the software.

I have a hard time concluding that you intend to write it yourself from these two sentences ;-)

Here is the slash site, anyway: http://www.slashcode.com/about.shtml
It doesn't seem to be in Portage, alas.
Squishdot is, but it's for Zope - so you'd need to run that as well.

Well, perhaps I wasn't being very clear. The problem with wanting to emulate the news postings of /. without knowing what they are called makes describing them ambiguous.

Anyway, it is easy enough to write some php or perl code that when a user clicks a button on website, they type in their article, it takes that input, and appends it to a textfile. That's what I'm talking about writing. But, as stated originally, I'm lazy, and don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.

Regardless, thanks very much for the code to slashdot- that's pretty slick, and part of it does exactly what I want it to do.
