Hey people, just wanting a little help with my gentoo install. I have had everything up and running for a week or so, and have been tinkering around. I recently tried to get opengel working, I have a Radeon 8500 graphics card, and followed the HOWTO on the Gentoo Wiki. However now when I boot, the kernel soils itself, stops loading, and spits out some error code. It seems to have a conflict (I really am not that sure as I am new to Linux) with the ALSA drivers, as the system always crashes when it tries to load the emu10k1 (Soundblaster Live!) drivers. Anyhow I have booted from the LiveCD, chrooted into my installation and tried recompiling the Kernel without the ALSA drivers, but no luck in stopping the crash.

So. My questions are, where should I start to try to fix this problem?

What log file will tell me what the problem is?

Is there a way I can get the system to boot at all?

Cheers in advance for any help!

Are you sure you only enabled sound card support in the kernel config and nothing (neither M nor *) in the underlying menus (ALSA and OSS)? If yes, does it still whine about the sound card?

EDIT: Here is a classic mistake I've made a hundred times: Are you sure you edited your bootloader configuration after disabling the sound card modules, so that you boot the new, modified kernel, and not the old one?

Sorry, to late to try anything now, as I have wiped and am in the process of re-installation. I wanted to change alot of things, and decided to 'push the button' and wipe everything.

Thanks for your suggestions, as I am new to linux I am greatly appreciative of any help! Anyhow, I guess it's all a big learning curve.

Thanks again for your help!!
