I've had problems with Cedega for two months. The nice people at Trangaming do help, but they are a bit slow. Here's what I know so far: I have a font problem. Cedega does work after it rebuilds the font metrics and displays the helpful message "Rebuilding font metrics." Then, after a couple of launches Cedega refuses to work again. (The only times I've been able to used Cedega then, I used it to install World of Warcraft patches. After that, Cedega broke again. I don't know if the patches are what breaks Cedega of if's only a coincidence.) So, my question is: how can I force the rebuild of the Cedega font metrics?

Right now, it's only happened twice:
  • once when I had recompiled X (it may be a little bit time-consuming to do this each time I want to play World of Warcraft) and
  • once after I hadn't touched Cedega for a long while (so I'm not sure what triggered the rebuild then).
I've tried many things, including re-installing the fonts with the Transgaming font installer and removing the files ~/.transgaming/cachedmetrics.:0.0 and ~/.transgaming/ftfontcache. Cedega still refuses to rebuild the font metrics. In short:

Is there a way to force a rebuild of the font metrics in Cedega?

Are you trying this as root or as a user?

I'm trying this as a user. All of Cedega's settings seem to be in ~/.transgaming and ~/.transgaming_global . I've just tried moving /root/.transgaming/ftfontcache, it didn't change anything and /root/.transgaming_global/Fonts does not exist. The error is still the same and Cedega does not seem to be missing its font metrics. The few times when Cedega did mysteriously want to rebuild its font metrics, I was also using it as a regular user.

I would try running it as root. It's possible some of the files it needs are currently not accessible by the user. I've had problems in the past with cedega and user access, to the point that I run my games (Everquest and WoW) as root.

Of course, that's the most obvious thing to try when a program doesn't work. And I hadn't tried it before reading your advice. Now I've tried it and it actually worked.

I feel a bit foolish. You were right. Thanks.
