Hi,

I have an Alpha computer at work. I wish to install Gentoo on it.
However, the CD-ROM is so old that it can't read/boot the Alpha installation CD of Gentoo.
Can anyone tell me what I should do in order to prepare a proper diskette for Alpha, so I'll be able to start the installation process with?
I have access to the Alpha CD through another computer, so if I need to copy anything from it, etc., it is possible. Please tell me what I should do.

Note: My Alpha's model is AlphaStation 200 4/166.

Thanks,

Adir.

If you are intending to do a stage 1 install, be warned that it will take literally days to compile everything.
Its going to get a really tough workout - I just took the top off mine to ensure heat wasnt going to be a problem and left it for 3 or 4 days.
You might want to check you have the latest firmware upgrades:

ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/archive/astn200.html

The old SCSI cdrom appears to be a bit sensitive to the quality of the media and speed of the burn.
Also, you might have more luck with one of the earlier iso images, try the 1.4 version.
You will of course still end up with an up-to-date system.

Good luck
