OK, is it me, or are there some problems popping up around the AMD processors & bootstrapping? ;)

But I digress.....

Using 1.4_rc2, stage one, x86 basic CD (going for the full optimization). Following configuration in make.conf

USE="X gtk -gnome -alsa"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"

Hardware as follows:

Athlon XP 1700
Biostar mobo
1GB RAM
120 GB ATA100 drive

When starting the bootstrap process, this is what I get every time:

cdimage portage # scripts/bootstrap.sh
Using >=sys-apps/baselayout-1.7.9-r1
Using >=sys-apps/portage-2.0.25
Using >=sys-devel/binutils-2.13.90.0.4

make: *** [sandbox.o] Error 1

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/portage-2.0.46-r9 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 4, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

I've tried with no USE directives, with CFLAGS at -mcpu=athlon-xp rather then -march=athlon-xp, and even an rc1 disk. But to no avail. :)

Have all this great hardware that I know gentoo will love to live on...once this minor issue gets resolved.

Thanks all!

as i installed only yesterday on an athlon xp 1700 it shouldnt be the cpu. i used a lot more agressive cflags and everything worked including kde and openoffice - perhaps u should check if your ram is functioning correctly...

Run some memory testing program on your RAM, if you think that it could possibly be the RAM. The bootstrap process will require your system's hardware to be working very well. It looks like quite a nice box too. :) Have you had other versions of Linux or that other OS up and running on this box before?

THis is a new machine that I've setup. I haven't tried any other Linux versions yet...will do so tonight. I have had Windows 2000 running on it to do the burn in using Sandra. Let that go for about 24 hours with no problems produced. I'm also going to try swapping out the RAM with some older DIMMs that I have lying around. These are all new components, so hopefully I didn't get some flake.

I found another thread talking about the same problem, with the same mobo. He swapped with another mobo and everything worked fine. Hrm...might end up trying that too.

I was also wondering if it's possible the Thoroughbred core could be causing a problem, but judging by other posts, it should be fine.

Thanks for the tips, folks. :)
