is this trying to tell me that my hard drive doesn't have long to live?

Code:

May 27 04:48:07 [kernel] hda: task_in_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
May 27 04:48:07 [kernel] ReiserFS: hda12: warning: vs-13070: reiserfs_read_locked_inode: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [1071561 1071562 0x0 SD]

I never have problems. the drive is slow though. also, I can turn on dma, but the next day dma is off again (without a reboot in between).

zojas,

Code:
emerge smartmontools
and see what the drives internal error log says about its health.
Yes, it may be dying. I had a drive start doing that about two years ago and running it 24/7, it took two years and a power cut to kill it.

you'll probably find that it will spread and your machine will start freezing up, esp when copying files..

now is prob a good time to get a new hdd and cp -a and install grub to mbr..

thanks guys. here's what smartd says so far:

Code:

May 28 06:21:02 [smartd] Device: /dev/hda, 224 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors_
May 28 06:21:02 [smartd] Device: /dev/hda, 209 Offline uncorrectable sectors_

so I guess I'm in the market for a new hard drive. I typically buy western digital, but this one hasn't lasted all that long. it's a 160gb, I think I only bought it a year ago, maybe I should try a different brand.

zojas,

If its only a year old, it may well be under warranty. HDD warranties are typically 3 years now.
Get the tset software from the vendors site.
A few of them run the tests and offer to print you an RMA if it fails.
