I just got a new laptop (Acer TravelMate 2201WLC). I installed gentoo but when I start x (with "startx") it have to wait very long before my default session is started (fluxbox, but i have the same problem if i choose Xsession). When I just start the x server (with "X") it seems to run smooth. When fluxbox is started it also runs smooth, but some applications start really slow. For example, firefox starts +-3x as fast as Eterm (a simple terminal emulator) I am running "x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1" on a ATI Radeon 9000IGP Mobility on a 1280x800 LCD screen.
Ask if you want more information
I tried multiple xorg configurations, with and without ati-drivers. I use xfs but I don't use framebuffer

I have a similar problem when I launch xterm (X consumes 100% cpu for several seconds). When it finally comes up on stderr it says
Quote:
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion

My problem is related to LANG=en_US.UTF-8 because if I export LANG=C the problem goes away.

Possibly it is too obvious but, you have xterm compiled with unicode?

On Fluxbox, more information on like solving the problem exists in http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Make_your_system_use_unicode/utf-8#fluxbox.

I use UTF-8, so this will probably be the problem. (THANKS!!! It was driving me nuts !)
I'm going to see if it works, and i will continue my whining if it doesn't :)

EDIT: It works without UTF-8

Plus I'd like to know the root of the problem so that I can fix it correctly. The Using UTF-8 with Gentoo guide mentions some optional font packages. My error message suggests that the problem may be font related.

Has any progress been made in this matter? I'm having the same problem here and it's really driving me nuts... xterms for example take about 37seconds(!) to start, which isn't really aceptable...

My xterm issue cleared up today when I downgraded from xterm-202 to xterm-200-r2.

[edit]Fixed post, I had it backwards[/edit]

Above garo says it works without UTF-8. It was the same way with xterm. export LANG=C got rid of the symptom. How about you grzewho? I don't see anything like this for eterm in bugzilla.
