Hello,

does Gentoo support multicpu on Sparc platform? I currently have a Ultra2 that just puked a 9gig disk and since this is my test machine I am thinking of trying Gentoo out (as a server, not as a workstation) but want to make sure it has SMP support.

Thanks very much

(Ps I had a look at the FAQ's and did not see this but I may just be blind as it is later afternoon after a long shift :) )

Thanks Nixnut.
when I get home I shall download/burn and give this os a try. I have heard many good things.

the best way to install on Sparc from what I read is to get the Universal install cd and follow the instructions on the docs page for sparc? or is there a cd with interaction setup?

thanks again

actually it works rather good on sparc..... interesting.

Can someone make a kernel patch that breaks multi processor support? For consistancy.

All kidding aside, I have an ultra 60 with 2 processors running gentoo.

run the top command and hit 1 to see the usage breakdown.

now if these two processors could run one kicker panel in kde without crashing, everyone in this forum would be happy.

For PCI-based SMP sparcs, you should stick to 2.4 kernels for the time being. We're making progress, but there is still a crash bug out there.

My Ultra 2E with 2 CPU's likes Gentoo. I prefer it over Solaris anyhow. :D

Dude, my Pic 8086 is better then slowaris.

Funny comment about the KDE kicker panel. For as long as that problem as been there, you would think someone would have figured it out. No pun on the Gentoo Devs...

If I could do It I would, but that just isn't my bag.

you wanted a patch that kills nice smp support on sparcs? :)

there is one which made it in 2.6.12 (and still present in 2.6.13)...
smp works just nice on 2.6.11, but u definitly have to disable preemptive support...

just for your info, new bug is in arch/sparc64/kernel/smp.c
function setup_per_cpu_areas()
