|
|
Hi,
I have a dvd rom in my system but i've never used it, so i guess there is no setting for the region. How do I do this and how do I now from what region the dvd-disc is (i don't find anythind region ... on the box nor the disc)?
thanks

On Linux, as long as you have libdvdcss, won't an application play a DVD from any region with no region changing necessary? I had a DVD-ROM that was region 1, but xine and ogle managed to play anything, while the Windows I was dual-booting wouldn't play a disc from region 2 or higher.

This seems to vary by DVD-ROM. The drive on my desktop system is similar to yours in that it will play any region in Linux, but is region 1 only in Windows. However, the drive on my laptop only works with region 1 disks even in linux. _________________ Kawada

I hope someone steps in and corrects me, but doesn't the firmware of the drive determine what region it can play, and in the case of RPC-2 prohibit changing the region more than a limited number of times, usually four or five? For all I know about RPC-2 drives you need to flash the firmware to be able to switch region encoding freely. There's an entire user forum devoted to this subject, but they're so Windows-centric up there that I didn't dare to ask about RPC and Linux...
EDIT: But then again I could have just gone there and searched for it... Apparently yes, you need to flash the firmware of the drive, but unfortunately you need at least a DOS floppy or an existing Windows installation to run the flashing tools they have. The admin (guy called >NIL) seems to be friendly to Linux users, but says there is no flasher for Linux systems. |

You could also use Videolan client which bypasses region checking and the piracy warning. Maybe xine skips it also which would explain why you could play any region under linux but not with your windows software.
Only problem is it doesn't do menu's and can be a little unstable. |

I've spend some time looking for a region patch for the firmware on my laptop's dvd, but after trying it in XINE with dvd-nav and dvd-css, it's already region free. windows whines about regions, but xine doesnt.
hope it helps |
