Having some strange problems... I did an
Code:
emerge --uD --newuse world && emerge gnome-light
over night, and in the morning, it was finished. However, since this morning, strange things have been happening. First of all, I could not launch any X programs (KDE, gnome, etc) except for gdm (but that's in my boot script). And, whenever I logged in from CLI, it said "-bash: /dev/null: permission denied". So I figure, this must be a permissions problem, so I chmod it to 777. Finally, KDE boots, and I am almost happy. Except, I go to "Terminal" and -- "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal". And "Run Command --> xterm" simply doesn't do anything. Did I mess something up by giving full permissions to /dev/null ? Something is seriously wrong.. I appreciate all help :(

It's a problem wiht udev, had the same problem. Follow the commands below to solve the problem:

emerge --unmerge udev
rm -r /etc/udev
emerge udev

Had the same problem after an upgrade to udev. Did the unemerge, renamed /etc/udev to /etc/bad_udev, then re-emerged udev.
Problem fixed. I noticed a few addtional lines in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules including a 666 permission on /dev/null, which was also messed-up during the upgrade. Thanks everyone!

I too had this problem; but the suggestion did not work... exactly.
After unmerging and remergeing the problem remained. :?
So I unmerged (udev-062) and remerged with previous (udev-060).
After reboot this solved my problem. :D
Thanx!!!

thanks everyone! this fixed my problem also. being a new user to Gentoo, i thought i was in a hopeless situation. but thanks to these forums (which i picked up in a google), i fixed one of the major problems with my system. now to move on to the other, slightly smaller stuff!

oh, by the way, for some reason, when i did "emerge udev" it picked up and used version 056 instead of 060. but this is fine, since 056 works also. but just out of curiousity, what is the difference? any upgardes that my pertain to the regular, every-day user that's new to the Gentoo system?

Thanks again for info already given and any information to be shared in the future!

Hi.
I also have this problem. I have edited my permissions.d/50-udev.permissions file to my liking but the changes does not take any effect after reboot. My udev.conf points to my permissions.d directory, so really don't understand this problem and cannot emerge -u where I am now and the following week so want to fix it on my computer if possible. Any clues and help are very welcome.

Kind regards to all Gentooists,

Anders.

Robbz, you're awesome. Don't know how you tracked this one down.

How did this problem with udev arise, anyway?

It's happened on 2 installs, one I used for a web server so it didn't bother me, but the other wouldn't let KDE start. Once I changed the /dev/null permissions I still couldn't get a Konsole to work, it opened but couldn't type into it. So the suggestion of un and re emerge worked perfect! Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
Saved my day as well.

Just one thing, I had to reboot after re-emerging the udev.

Cheers.
