Hacking the Tom Tom Go?

Post by Tarball » Tue May 10, 2005 11:38 am

Anybody have any info on the hackablility of this device?

I plan to get one of these but I can't decide whether to get the 500 or 700

Code: Select all

main differences:

                     500 700
---------------------------------------------------------------
Storage | SD card SD card + 2.5GB HD
Memory | 32MB 64MB
It would be cool if this device could be 'tweaked' to play DivX movies and MP3 files!

Tom Tom Go 700 - Technical Specification

400 Mhz ARM920T processor
64 MB RAM
2.5 GB hard disk storage
320 x 240 x 4096 colours 3.5" TFT screen

115mm x 92mm x 58mm, 310 grams

mabe it'snot the same unit but you could try booting it
The Go is based on an Intel XScale processor with a 200MHz ARM920T core. It boots from Flash memory into 32MB of RAM. The display is a quarter-VGA (320x240) TFT LCD touchscreen. The Go includes an integrated 12-channel GPS receiver with built-in antenna, and "all-in-view" tracking.

I/O ports include:
SD memory slot for cards containing regional maps
mini-USB device port
integral loudspeaker
power charging jack

I realise it is already is already running linux.

I was wondering what the feasibility of turning this device into a kind of in-car/portable media centre?

Would it be capable of decoding DivX/Xvid?

Would it be capable of hosting a USB harddisk?

try to invetigate and run another linux distribution:
1)understand how this unit work:
how does it boot, the type of processor...
2)extract the old linux =>get the base system to your distribution or some info to know how to make a specific distrib form this device
3)build the new linux and make the unit work with your programs
mabe you could get some info because of the law about the licences...
linux us gnu...
there is a clause about distribution and source code if i remeber...

This should get you started. Tom Tom used GPLed code - while initially they seemed to forget about the terms of the license they've since released the kernel including patches etc.

So that should get you the basics up and running.

Cheers,

Alan.
