I've bought a Canyon webcam, model CN-WCAM23.

root@stoppos everything # lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0ac8:301b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

OK, i find a driver for this at
http://zc0302.sourceforge.net/

but modprobe said:

May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] /root/zc030x/zc030x_i2c.c: [zc030x_i2c_reg_read:78] <<< I2CREGREAD : udev = c15f1400, addr 0014(1)
May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] /root/zc030x/zc030x_i2c.c: [zc030x_i2c_reg_read:113] >>> I2CREGREAD : ret 30, value : 0000

May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] /root/zc030x/zc030x_i2c.c: [zc030x_i2c_detect:265] >>> I2CREGDETECT : ret 1, sensor not found in the range 0-FF
May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] /root/zc030x/zc030x_cameras.c: [zc030x_detect_sensor:208] Sensor not found
May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] /root/zc030x/zc030x_main.c: [zc030x_probe:203] ERROR: Device not supported !
May 8 21:13:30 [kernel] zc030x: probe of 1-1:1.0 failed with error -12

Than an expert told me, that he could use the cam under kernel 2.4 with the spca driver
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/spca50x/)
'Couse this driver is obsolate (and doesn't work with 2.6) i emerged spca5xx.
#modprobe spca5xx
#lsmod
spca5xx 292440 0
videodev 7616 1 spca5xx
v4l2_common 4736 0

...
log:
Apr 6 16:02:56 [kernel] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using
uhci_hcd and address 3
Apr 6 16:02:56 [kernel] /root/spca5xx-20050328/drivers/usb/spca5xx.c:
USB SPCA5XX camera found. Type Vimicro Zc301P
(it's also strange that the spca5xx documentation (http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html) say that z-star - vimicro need the zc0302 driver, I've tried first)

So, it creates /dev/video with 666, but when i try to run for example gqcam it freezes. No log entry. Nothing.

Any advice?

I know some USB devices need the USBGRABBER=1 option when loading spca5xx. Check the README.

README said:
The usbgrabber=1 needs if you use grabber usbid 0x733:0x430
(my usbid is: {USB_DEVICE (0x0ac8, 0x0302)}, /* Z-star Vimicro zc0302*/)

I tried it anyway .
modprobe usbgrabber=1 debug=4
