X11 problem -- Per display information?

I can't seem to figure this one out, and was wondering in anyone had some input. Ruled out all the basics. I've been using xwindows for quite a while, never encountered this. Things used to work too, but somewhere they stopped, and I believe it was after one of the kde updates but I'm not certain (not the most recent update).

Essentially the problem goes like this:
xhost + xyzhost.blah
rlogin xyzhost.blah (and or ssh or telnet)
export DISPLAY=mybox.blah:0.0
xterm

And I get:
Error: Can't open display: mybox.blah:0.0
Error: Couldn't find per display information

Now, I know that the per display information error relates to something with X on my system. I can't find anything wrong though. Google only turns up some info on Motif but doesn't indicate where or how to look for the problem.

Any ideas?
