i686-pc-linux-gnu-ranlib libpython2.3.a

libpython2.3.so.1.0 and the link libpython2.3.so exist in /usr/lib/

I already emerged glibc new. But it did not solve the problem.
Any ideas?

mod edit, -curtis119. Made this sticky temporarily. Getting to many dups of this.

Fix is in CVS. Sync when it hits the mirrors, and if it's still broken complain on the bug above.

If you can't wait that long then the fix in comment 18 worked for me.

Direct link to that fix: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91024#c18

I'm waiting though for the ebuild to be updated.

Hi All,

This is the first time I've experienced a bug in Gentoo and I'd be interested to find out more about what caused it. I read all the comments in the bug report and I also read the readme in the Python distribution.

Why does the Python configure script set "LIBC=". Should this setting not reflect the LIBC that is present in the system?

The Python readme talks about a problem in glibc verison 2.0.5 that is fixed in version 2.0.7. Are these problems related?

Cheers,
Andy

AIUI, the configure script listens to LIBC in the environment, or the --with-lib= command-line switch, to allow you to link against a different C library than the system default -- perhaps you want to build it against dietlibc for some bizarre reason. Now, we introduced a LIBC variable into the profiles to allow ebuilds to enable config switches / dependencies based on the libc in use, since we support several of them now. However, the configure script was expecting something in the form of -l<blah> to pass to the linker, and our LIBC variable was just "glibc" on the default profiles. Hence breakage.

I'm installing a new system and at stage 2 I get an error that looks very much like this error (bug 91024), but the line number where the error occurs is different from what I've seen so far (although only 1 line difference):

Code:
c++  -Xlinker -export-dynamic -o python \
                Modules/python.o \
                -L. -lpython2.3 -ldl  -lutil   -lm

./libpython2.3.so: undefined reference to `sem_post'
./libpython2.3.so: undefined reference to `pthread_detach'
./libpython2.3.so: undefined reference to `sem_init'
./libpython2.3.so: undefined reference to `pthread_sigmask'
./libpython2.3.so: undefined reference to `sem_trywait'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [python] Error 1

!!! ERROR: dev-lang/python-2.3.5 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 134, Exitcode 2
!!! Parallel make failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

I did an emerge sync to make sure I got the latest version. I even tried
Code:
LIBC="" emerge python
what used to work for many people as a temporarely fix, but here it always quits with the very same error message.

Anyone can give me a hand here?

Found the problem... It was because of my (possibly too aggressive) CFLAGS settings. It's compiling just fine now.

If your CFLAGS are preventing Python from building, they are certainly too 'aggressive' by far.

Ok, I have encountered this same error, and
Code:
LIBC="" emerge -u python

fixed it. This (as far as I could tell) was said to have been patched, on May 1st, I have sync'd recently and it still required the work-around, any idea why? I dont like this work-around, as it prevents me from
Code:
emerge -pv world;emerge world
and leaving the computer overnight, as it stops the process at python, which is one of the first if not first compile.
