mplayer + sblive! 5.1 + dtt 2500 =...2 channels??

i took a look at the posts in this forum and i decided than none of them answered my question. i've got a sb live! 5.1 and cambridge soundworks. i use the SPDIF to connect the speakers and emu-config to switch between digital and analogic sound. it all works properly. but i haven't managed yet to get a real 5.1 when i watch a dvd. i've got both alsa and oss installed (i'm a noob in this field, so correct me freely whether i say something wrong) but every time i watch a dvd i see this in the terminal, among the information that mplayer gives me:
AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 48000 hz, little endian signed int
AF_pre: 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
AO: [oss] 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) (2 bps)
i have deduced that the "2 ch" stands for "2 channels", and i'm pretty sure that ac3 is NOT the stereo mode!
where can i find the information that could help me to solve this problem, what files should i check and, finally, how can i be SURE that the 5.1 works correctly without having to put my ear near every speaker?

Hi,
Well i have got this stuff SBLive! 5.1 + Creatice Inspire 5300 and ac3 works good for me when:
1. i set SURROUND=no and PROLOGIC=no in my /etc/emu10k1 (a i use emu10k drivers from gentoo portage tree)
2. i start mpalyer this way mplayer -channels 6

it seems to have worked!!
Checking audio filter chain for 48000Hz/6ch/16bit -> 48000Hz/6ch/16bit...

i didn't check whether each speaker actually did a different sound but this message should prove that mplayer is using every single speaker...
