The last I heard is that Linux doesn't support that hardware yet...

Of course, it's been a while since I've heard about it, so they could have slapped some code in to make up for the differences in the architecture.

I have Debian linux running on a Sun Blade 100. You must include the testing distribution to get the latest kernel. The only problem I have found with Debian is lack of support for a PCI/HME ethernet card that I need to use.

When I tried to install Gentoo using the sparc boot cd, it did not work. It hung after printing a capital R.

Here is what I saw on the screen:

Sun Blade 100 (UltraSPARC-IIe), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed, Serial #50380540.

Rebooting with command: boot cdrom

I spoke/posted too quickly. Trying again with a 'ramdisk -s' succeed in bringing me to single user mode.

RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
Freeing initrd memory: 1100k freed
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
Mounted devfs on /dev
serial console detected. Disabling virtual terminals.
init started: BusyBox v0.60.3-pre (2002.01.22-00:19+0000) multi-call binary
You are running "ash", a Bourne-shell clone. The root filesystem is
a RAM disk. The editor available to you is "nano-tiny".

To install gentoo, mount the cdrom and chroot into a root dir:
# mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt
# chroot /mnt/root-`uname -m` bin/bash
# source /etc/profile

Then mount the partition you want to use as gentoo's new "/" and
unpack one of the stage tarballs (this is an example - don't copy!):
# mount -n /dev/hda2 /mnt/gentoo; cd /mnt/gentoo
# bunzip2 -c /stage2-sparc-1.1a.tbz2 | tar xvpf -

There is more information in the README.maintainer on the CD and at
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/build.html

# ls
bin initrd mnt sbin usr
dev instmnt proc target var
etc lib release_notes tmp
floppy lost+found root type.txt
#

Im currently using SuSE 7.3 on a Sun Blade 100, works great, but I doubt there are any sparc 64 bit optimizations in gcc 3.1 (I could be wrong). I got the SuSE gcc 3.1 rpm's and most things compile nicely.

I might give Gentoo a try, since all I run is IceWM, Aterm, SSH and samba.

BTW, does Sound work under Gentoo sparc? I cant get it to work on SuSE 7.3

I've managed to accquire a Sun Blade 100, however, I am unable to boot from the CD-ROM properly.

After I see the SILO prompt, and I type "ramdisk", it says "Uncompressing Kernel".

They, it says "Fast MMU Access", or some odd message that indicates a failure to boot, and drops back to the PROM 'ok' prompt.

I will be trying a netboot later on, once I finish getting my gentoo install on it up to par (intel system).

I am currently using a sun blade 100 with gentoo. I had to upgrade my PROM but after that everything worked great.
