couldn't find the answer on the forum, so here i go:

after startx i get

<snip>
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
<snip>

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

Anyone who can point me in the right direction?
I'm using a geforce, but haven't installed nvidia drivers yet

thanx for any suggestions,

deech

Go through the Desktop Guide on Gentoo's main site word for word (atleast the X part :) ). It is also a good idea to merge the nvidia modules.

thanx craftyc, but i think i did that allready. And I will install the nvidia drivers right after i solved this problem. I mean it should work without the nvidia drivers, and i want it to, just for learning's sake :wink:

any other suggestions?

Well, you should have your video driver as "nv" in XF86Config instead of "nvidia" if you haven't emerged the drivers... here's what google was willing to tell me on the matter (here's the link from xfree86.org:)

Quote:

Hi.

A minor thing I noted today:
If you enable devfs in the linux kernel, the apm_bios device-file
ends up as /dev/misc/apm_bios

XFree86 expects it to be found as:
/dev/apm_bios

source:
/mnt/disk5/xfree86_402a/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/lnx_apm.c

One can either make a symlink, or patch the XFree86 sources.
Is there a way to catch this at compile-time, or even test for both
device-files and make it work either way at run-time?
(To the degree the code is functional....)
