Hello everyone! I'm pretty new to Gentoo and I just managed to do a Stage 1 NPTL with stage 3 tarball (2005.0 profile) install with safe useflags. I'm pretty satisfied with the distro. Windows XP was going over my head and I didn't like Kubuntu so I switched to Gentoo. Unfortunately I've run into some very strange problems with my graphics card and my ethernet chip...
fglrx (Ati binary driver) problem
* Problem
After a fresh boot, login and a startx the computer stalls, shows a black screen and becomes totally unresponsive.
* What I've done
I've followed the Ati radeon Gentoo wiki FAQ and set up my kernel perfectly as it says. I've also found a temporal solution that initiates the driver without any problem and let's me play 3d games etc. First I made two different backups of the xorg.conf, one generated with fglrxconf (xorg.conf.atidriver.backup) and one with xorgconfig (xorg.conf.osdriver.backup). Then I did this process after rebooting and SU:ing. Just to the record I'm using the proper horizontal and vertical syncs provided on the tech sheet of my monitor and I haven't noticed any weird lines etc. The drivers I've tried are 8.10 and 8.12.

As with the other config I can start KDE fine. But this time my glxinfo shows almost 5000 and I'm able to play Doom3 and UT2004 on high settings with decent framerates as the binary driver actually works unlike after a reboot. I haven't tried Cedega yet but I may do it later. I don't think I'll run into some problems with it though. I guess this could be a temporary solution for those who are having the "Black screen of death" problem but it isn't really what I would like to do every time I reboot. I'll post the configs later but first to my ethernet problem.
TG3 driver
* Problem
Whenever I reboot the computer the connection is dead as seen with the ntpdate update which fails.
* What I've done
I've compiled the kernel correctly with the tg3 the driver and also tried to put it as a module. I've also tried the official Broadcom bcm570x driver with the same results. The tg3 driver is added to the init according to the documentation and it loads fine when booting. The temporal solution I've found is to just restart the eth0 interface.

And whoops. It just works. Weird huh?
The resolv.conf, dnsdomain, hostname, hosts, domainname, net files are all properly configured after som tweaking (no unknown localhost problem, dns works fine etc). Also, the 2005.0 livecd won't load my connection properly even when disabling acpi and probing the tg3 module so I had to do the whole install from Lxnay's RR4 livecd (connection worked perfectly from the start with the same tg3 module) which I'm very thankfull for. Except Lxnay's disc the connection also works perfectly with WinXP SP2, Ubuntu livecd, Knoppix, Kubuntu install etc. I didn't try to restart the eth0 interface from the 2005.0 livecd though.

I guess this is some kind of initiate (init?) problem but I have no idea of how to fix it. I hope you can help Tell me if you want some more configs and I'll bring them up. 1st question::: you can't switch from ati compiled drivers to xorg/kernel drivers only changing the xorg.conf file. libgl.so from 2 drivers are different so you have to update it before starting X
if you want to use fglrx you have to:
if you want to use radeon driver you have to
then it will work well...
for the second question the problem is that you do not have the service of the net into the default runlevel...
you have to write:.... Code: | rc-update add net.eth0 default | (or boot if you want) Code: | rc-update add net.eth0 boot |
i'm not on my linux box so i can mistaked typing some command but more or less they are like i have typed it

Yes you're right, I should have thought of that. Though I've been running with ATI's opengl files in both modes without any problems. I also tried to update the files after each driver change but it didn't help.

As you can see in my latest status message (rc-update) It's already loaded into default. I've just tried adding it to the boot mode but it didn't help either.

About your xorg problem i think that do you have a problem with agpgart... (please put your Xorg.0.log when it crashes) as my own experience (in my computer) ati drivers doesn't work well without agpgart...
In your xorg.conf for the fglrx driver you have the Code: | Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes" | for that you don't have to have the agpgart driver loaded neither as module nor compiled into the kernel but InternalAGPGART doesn't work almost for my computer (see if there are some "AGP" error lines into your Xorg.conf).... to solve it i have to use Code: | Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no" | and load agpgart module from kernel and the driver for your chipset..... i've solved all my ati problems doing it.
about your eth0 problem.... are you sure that your net driver is loaded before /etc/init.d/net.eth0 script is executed? the only idea i have is that your driver isn't loaded when you run the init scripts so it can't find the card when it is runned....i reccommend you 2 things....
1st add your net module to the autoload file for your kernel...
2st put the dbus, hald, coldplug scripts into the boot runlevel to be sure that they are loaded before you are trying to run the /etc/init.d/net.eth0 script.
i don't know if this is your problem.... i'm only conjeturing...
i hope this second message can help you more than the first...

Once again, thanks for answering. I've done as you said except I don't think It will be necessary to post the xorg.0.log this time.
After trying your suggestions I've read a lot about similar problems and I've tried different solutions without any luck at all until I saw the possibility of adding the acpi=on option to the kernel boot parameters and *bang*, both problems were solved. I can now start with the fglrx drivers+proper config enabled directly and the ntpdate reaches the server directly+no need to restart the eth0. Now I boot without the beautiful framebuffer for some reason (ACPI related off course) which would be nice to get fixed.
Also I've fixed burning on user level but the audio is dead since some days ago (Just died when I switched to kde 3.4 from 3.3). I've checked everything in the alsa module config but everything seems to be ok.
edit:
The framebuffer was the cause of the problem. I managed to mess up the grub.conf when entering the acpi=on option. The InternalAGPGART option could also have been interfering with this. It should be set to NO. _________________ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor) |
