Alright, I'm trying to get XFree86 to work, but it keeps crashing on me. I have a GeForce 4 TI4400. I've tried with the generic vga driver and the nvidia driver (just the standard one in xfree "nv"). I'm setting my monitor settings a little low, just so I don't have to worry about that. When I look into the log file, I think these lines are the most important to diagnosing my problem:
Code:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Sounds like you need a "Screens" session. This associates a video card with a monitor. Here's mine (TNT-2/Riva 128 w/ Xinerama):

Code:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "TNT2"
        Monitor "Left"
        DefaultDepth 15
        Subsection "Display"
                Depth 15
                Modes "1280x1024"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I have a device named "TNT2" and a monitor named "Left" (original, huh?). I believe this error message can also mean that it can't find a valid screen for your graphics card/monitor combination.

If this doesn't work, post your XF86Config file.

Jim

have you tried running the command XFree86 -configure followed by XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new?

the -configure option will make have XFree86 autodetect settings for your monitor/video card combination. If that doesn't do anything, then something is seriously messed up. The XF86Config.new is a barebones file that you'll probably want to edit (provided it works) to put your resolutions and such in the display subsections

Alright, I tried XFree86 -configure, but I get an error message. The error is
Code:
Fatal server error:

XFree86 has found a valid card configuration.
Unfortunately the appropriate data has not been added to xf86PciInfo.h.
Please forward 'scanpci -v' output to XFree86 support team.

Thanks for the help so far, but keep giving me more suggestions to try.

i just checked xfree86's driver support for nvidia..turns out only supports up to geforce 3. you'll have to get nvidia's proprietary kernel mod and video card driver and use that in your xfree86 config file. you can do 'emerge -s nvidia' and it lists the two packages you have to emerge. or, alternatively, there was a new nvidia module just released today at http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux, so you could try installing that.

either way, the generic "nv" module that xfree86 provides won't work.

Startx finally works. Now I just need to get my mouse working and my screen adjusted right. When I startx, I only see 1/4 of the nVidia symbol. I remember reading about someone else with the same problem, but I can't seem to find the post. I also can't get my mouse working, I have a logitech optical pluged into the USB port.

That's strange. I use a Geforce 4 MX 420 and it works fine with the "nv" drivers. But I can't get it working with with the "nvidia" drivers. I tried the ebuilds (2880) and the latest from the website (2960) - both will freeze xfree and I have to reboot.

I have following warnings in my /var/log/XFree.log file:
Quote:

(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to verify AGP usage

I thought, this is supposed to be so: Disable AGP support in the kernel and set the "NvAGP" option to "1" - or I am wrong ?

hmm.. i do have agp support in kernel..

Code:

ares linux # less .config | grep AGP
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_AGP_I810=y

and

Code:

Section "Screen"
        DefaultDepth   24
        Identifier      "Screen 0"
        Device          "NV AGP"
        Monitor         "Monitor0"
        Option          "NvAgp"         "3"
        Option          "CursorShadow"  "on"

maybe take a look in the nvidia install howto... i can remember of about 20 pages of how to install this ;)

I have compiled agp support into the kernel:

When I boot up AGPART says:
unsupported bridge
no supported device found

the nvagp options are
0 -disable AGP
1 - use NVAGP
2 - use AGPART
3 - Try NVAGP first, then AGPART

If I set NvAGP to "1" the xfree.logfile tells me that loading of the nvidia drivers fail. But when I type "lsmod" the NVdriver is properly loaded.

Anybody got this working?

-Jay
Your GeForce 4 MX will work with the regular nv drivers because it is basically a hyped up GeForce 2. The Ti and MX series graphics cards use different cores, NV18 and NV25.

AFAIK, if you have agp support built into the kernel you can't use the nvidia AGP (nvagp) support (option 1). I see that kernel support isn't loading anyway, but just thought I'd point that out. You might want to compile kernel agp support as a module and don't load it at boot (or don't include it at all in your kernel). What happens if you set it as option 3?

Regarding the 'unsupported bridge' message, do you have your chipset support in the kernel (i.e. AMD Viper or whatever)? agp might be complaining because of that... what are you running on?
