Well All clap please :)

My first Gentoo install is working..

Well ok not quite - No network - no desktop - no pakages/bits of running things - Just a prompt..

BUT WHAT NOW!!!

Am I doing the right thing being a COMPLETE novice at Linux is Gentoo a bit in the DeepEnd..

Hell took me 2 hours to figure out how to mount a CD-ROM .. Then the girlfriend had a right giggle when I couldn't eject it... "Ahh!! you have to umount it 1st" she chuckles while on another PC looking through google..

Soon got me KVM out kicked her off that one and now hogging both machines 1 in good old ' a dumb ass could use it' Windows looking through Page after page of Tips, Tricks forums..
While my Gentoo Box sits there waiting to be loved... (on the other KVM channel i might add)

Well what to do... Heck emerge.. Hmm!! emerge what.. I know gnome. Hahahahah!! Yeah OK won't do that in a hurry again..

(Hope this is not sounding like the rantings of a mad man)

6 builds of Gentoo and finally got a working one... Well no 2nd worked I just went and installed MicroSith WinDoze and we all know what happens then!! And a nOOb like me was he able to find the Grub.conf or even get it to boot back again NoNoNoNoNo.. MicroSith had me in it's grasp again :(

SO 6 bulds now Gentoo sitting there.. Windows when I have to

SO I ask you all..

Where can I go to just get a basic How To of installing stuff, Don't ask what Anything will do.. Most I have found assume you know Linux a bit.. I don't

BUT I WILL.. oh yes I WILL

Or shal I get the 4 Disk Fedors that have been calling to me from the Draw... I REALLy don't want to..

For all those other apps, here's the complete Documentation Index
Furthermore help at the Gentoo Wiki

If by prompt you mean you have booted the setup disk well done :)

Gentoo is fun if you have the time, but you will need time.

Want to get out and see the scenery from the fast lane install Ubuntu.

I once asked, if Gentoo was a car what type of car would it be, to which the reply was, 'one in the garage all the time!'

You need to know your way around the command line before relying on gentoo to get things done, so slap on the LPlates take Ubuntu for a spin and come back to Gentoo a bit later.

You can always ignore this advice, but if you do, no ranting in the forums that Gentoo is too hard now.

No I really mean i'm at root and
Code:
 su
to a user.. May not seem like much to you folks BUT heck ya gotta remeber the last time I was typing commands in really was getting Doom2 up and running on my 1st PC...

I just wanted a bit of a rant here

Network is now running... Hoorah!! Wow that makes things a bit easier..

Don't worry I won't bitch about how hard it is.. I knew it was I find for me it's the best way to learn Jump in the deep end and start learning..

OK I'm off to do some make.conf editing and emerging to see what the difference really is between KDE and Gnome.. Hopefully I won't break anything

I'm sure You'll see me around..

Kinky.

Second the advice above, stick Ubuntu on to take a quick tour of gnu/Linux. If you've got time and patience Gentoo will teach you a fair old bit. You've just picked up on the mount/umount thing for example !

Ps - What's this date thing that everybody keeps mentioning ?

A Formula 1 car.. it's faster than anything else but you have to rebuild it every few hundred k's ;-)

Not necessarily, I'd never seriously used Linux before Gentoo and I managed to get it up and going. Ubuntu's nice and all (if a bit brown) but it's just not the same somehow ;-)

Heh, liar, women love men who develop Gentoo. It's a turn on I guess, which is why I'm now using Gentoo.

Hehe - yes, I did emerge gnome as well.

Four hours later, at 3:30 am I went to bed. When I got up at 9:30, it was still running. 8O

On the other hand, it installed all of the GUI, Xorg, etc., as well as Gnome. All I had to do then was work out how to get Xorg to configure. Eventually, I had the brilliant idea of......... wait for it........ reading the man pages

The odd thing is, while I was struggling through the text-mode installation (which brought back memories of years gone by), I was thinking I would never get it to work and it was not worth the effort.

However, now I have (most) of it working, it feels so good to have made the effort. A real achievement.

I know most of you think nothing of installing Gentoo in your sleep - no offence but we all have to start somewhere.

Good luck with that :)

When you are done and want to learn some new stuff -- or are just bored -- try this list.

http://linuxcommand.org in particular is just plain swell for newbies.
