Ok in the latest emerge -uavtDN world I get this:
Code:
[ebuild     UD]     media-libs/imlib2-1.2.0.004 [1.2.0.20050220] +X -doc +gif +jpeg -mmx +nls +png +tiff

So I go and upgrade and I get this error:
Code:
checking for freetype-config... /usr/bin/freetype-config
checking for X... no
configure: error: no X support found.  Use --x-includes and --x-libraries to specify the X
path on your system, or --without-x to disable X support.

!!! Please attach the config.log to your bug report:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/imlib2-1.2.0.004/work/imlib2-1.2.0.004/config.log

!!! ERROR: media-libs/imlib2-1.2.0.004 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 485, Exitcode 0
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

And I've tried USE=-"X" and nothing works.:?

That bug report tells you what to do, (copy the patch into the files directory and modify the ebuild).

It also says it's been fixed upstream so leave it a few hours and re-sync then it should emerge OK.

Should you be running ~x86 if you don't know how to apply a patch with a link to a page with instructions on how to apply a patch?

I've been using Debian unstable since 1998 and Gentoo ~x86 since mid 2002, and they're wildly different beasts.
