I have followed all the steps to install gentoo 2005.0. including the same partition configuration. Once grub is installed and I log off from the system appears the grub menu. When I choose gentoo to start, after too many messages appears:

>> Determining root device
>> Block device /dev/hda3 is not a valid root device...
>> The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() ::

My partition table has 3 entries:

/dev/hda1 for boot (ext2)
/dev/hda2 for swap
/dev/hda3 for / (ext3)

My grub.conf is the same than the manual of gentoo 2005.0 (kernel compiled with genkernel)

Somebody knows what the problem is?

There are two listings for grub.conf in the handbook. One is for genkernel users and the other for non-genkernel users. I have a feeling that you have used the non-genkernel grub.conf for a genkernel setup. If I am right, your grub.conf looks like this:
Code:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r3 root=/dev/hda3

It needs to look like this:
Code:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r3 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda3
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-gentoo-r3

I had the same problem...but it was because I was half-dead when installing on my new system with SATA and I specified /dev/hda3 instead of /dev/sda3

So I just gave the command at the boot():: prompt /dev/sda3 and it booted fine - then I fixed it
