I use gcombust for burning cds, and i never any problems with it.
I usually don't bother setting the speed, because in my experience gcombust (well cdrecord) chooses it itself. so with speed at 2 or 32, I still usually burn @ 8 speed.
The thing is i _want_ to burn at 1 speed.
Is that possible, would using cdrecord from the command line give me more control?
BTW, this is for burning an audio cd.

Ok. since I want to burn an audio cd, I think I should use cdrdao.
I'll see if I control the speed better too...

right. well I knew about
cdrecord speed=1
but that still doesn't work. minimum speed i get is 8
same applys with cdrdao.
is it possible that some burners only support certain speed settings?

mine only seem to do 8, 16, 24, 32
:(

I suppose not many people need or want to burn at 1 speed these days.

Consider picking up an older Plextor or Lite-On Drive. They have always been quality, and an old one will most likely do 1x, and be relatively cheap.

I believe you can check some of the speeds @ the blindwrite hardware database, and maybe in a few reviews @ CDFreaks.com .... ask around @ the CDFreaks forums for a good 1x drive. (Also, the Liteon site has a list of all their old burners with specs)

it is for burning audio (CDA).
funny things can happen when burning cd's at > 8x. The audio quality can deteriorate really quickly.

I am finishing the mastering process of a few tracks I recorded for a friend. now the master is going to be pressed, So you do need the _Best_ quality you can get.
I usually use a HBB industry standard hardware cdrecorder for this kind of job, but I don't have acces to it right now...
