|
|
Hello,
This is an absolutely desperate cry for help.
I recently bought a Dell Dimension 8250 and my first wish was to put wipe it clean and put gentoo on. I proceeded to boot off the RC2 cd and to my disbelief the system froze when it got to the first stage of the installation which was to pick the correct keymap. I have tried all the boot parameters including nonet, noscsi, acpi-no and noapci but they all froze the system on the first stage.
So I moved back to the RC1 cd which had got me through many installs on other machines. The booting and installation went beautifully. Having finished the installation I rebooted. Now, on screen, the gentoo system loaded completely and got to a text login. However, as I tried to type 'root' into the username field I realised that the keyboard wasn't responding at all.
It seems that during both the hang on rc2 boot and the hang after rc1 install and reboot seem to disable the keyboard somehow since everything looks normal on screen. I cannot be sure whether it is the system that freezes or if it is the keyboard driver that is at fault.
I have tried gentoo-sources and vanilla-sources on the rc1 install and both have the same result. My hardware specs are as follows. I would love to hear any suggestions or events from your past experience similar to this one with Dell machines and how you resolved it.
Intel 2.66GHz CPU
120GB HD
512MB RDRAM
64MB GeForce4MX420
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Intel 850E Chipset Motherboard
Standard Dell PS2 Keyboard
Many thanks. _________________ http://dhruba.name/ |
