Trying to compile my kernel and i am getting this error.

"make[1]: Leaving directroy '/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-gentoo-r10/arch/i386/boot'

make: *** No rule to make target 'modules'. Stop."

any ideas on why this would be happening?

Umm... I am guessing you probably copied the kernel before you built the modules... And when you did that you cd'd to the directory bzImage is in...

Make sure you run "make modules" from "/usr/src/linux"

Are you doing:
Code:
make menuconfig
make dep && make bzImage modules modules_install

I would like to add this thread, if I may, as I'm at a similar point in the install as well: compiling kernel.
I get as far as:

# mv /boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.orig command, but it indicates that the file/dir does not exist.
Now: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml gives a quote that:
[if bzImage already exists]
Can I assume that if it doesn't exist, I can just continue on...?

Yes, a NEWBIE I am...
