I just saw this on slashdot some one actually made Gimp look similar to photoshop.

Any idea when there will be an ebuild? ;-)

i have always complaint that gimp was good, but it was not "intiutiv". I think porting adobe photoshop gui to gimp is something that a lot of people were shouting loud. Now i hope someone can make an ebuild. It would be so good.

I'm building it right now. It's a pretty straightforward ./configure && make && make install setup, although I had to emerge gimp-print first to make it happy...

I'll let you guys know how it turns out!

EDIT: well its built. It looks clean, and the splash screen is different, but it still uses the the multiple window layout approach. I thought the guy had hacked everything to be under one window (MDI) like Photoshop. Seemingly to me thats always been peoples biggest complaint against the Gimp.

works pretty slick. emerge gimp-print then just npack the tbz ./configure && make && make install
dont forget to env-update && soruce /etc/profile after installing it

ive never made an ebuild but I would assume this would be an easy package to create one for very simple and straight forward.

btw you dont need gimp-print if you want you can pass --disable-printing or something similar to the configure script

And what would the Linux community say if a proprietary developer copied a Linux program to a tee?

Nope. Are people happy about it?

Besides making a watch look like a rolex doesnt make it a rolex. It makes it a cheap knock off. GIMP is far inferior to PSD and simply making it "look" like it doesnt bring it any closer to functioning just as well. Its a stupid idea and a waste of time unless you are actually going to code GIMP to function identically...

lol. i think the idea here is you are welcome novice users a little bit by giving them a familiar starting point. the gimp, despite whatever flaws it may have, is still a very powerful program. remember, the people at adobe are all paid and work in a really nice office building (first hand knowledge on that). the people who work on the gimp are, well, less well resourced...

btw, if you don't want to do an ebuild, and you dont want to do a make install, either, you can always stop at the "make" command and just run the program from your home directory. no need to gum up your system with files that portage doesn't know about.

Both have been claimed of ripping off GPL code. Pojo basically sums up my argument. The only thing I could add to it is... Its just cool looking.

You know what's funny? Just 5 minutes ago, I was reading a Slashdot comment on the story that said:

pherthyl (445706) wrote:

It's really quite amazing how negative many people are.

User: "Wah! Gimp doesn't look like photoshop!"

Dev: "Here, we recreated the photoshop interface for Gimp. You may be more comfortable with it now"

User: "Wah! Gimp doesn't act like photoshop!"

Holy s**t people. The Gimp rocks, be thankful for that. Yes it doesn't have some of photoshop's features, but most people don't need those features anyway. You can't tell me most people are professional graphic artists or work in a print shop. For those people, get Photoshop, for everyone else, get the Gimp. Would you rather spend 700 bucks, or an extra 5 minutes figuring soemthing out?

Unless of course, you have no ethical problem with illegaly copying software, in which case you might as well get Photoshop for your l33t h4x0r graphics.

I agree, to some extent, with both the pherthyl as well as Lokheed.. sure the GIMP is great and sure, it needs a whole lot of additional features but the devs are trying. Meanwhile, those who dabble with graphics could help with constructive criticism, beta-testing etc

I personally believe that GIMPShop is going to make my life just a little more easier.. if anything because I'm used to Photoshop's interface. So, props to the creator, Scott Moschella, for that (at the very least).

Now.. anyone out there who can cook up an ebuild?

As long as they don't steal code, they can do whatever they please.

Sorry for my ignorance:oops:
Thanks for the ebuild but I get
Code:

Don't undertsand why this generate an error with firefox. The only exclusion i added was to the gimp to avoid corrupting gimp's install.

However, the actual version of firefox is 1.0.2, a security update so i can only urge you to upgrade...

I just upgraded firefox yesterday (manually as emerge -u world won't upgrade firefox !?), and upgraded gtk+-2.6.4-r1 and glib-2.6.2-r1too, so it will be hard to help you on this one

Try to upgrade gtk is perhaps related and post an "emerge -p gimpshop" if you still can't emerge...

Please see pussi's post: you must upgrade firefox and thunderbird so you'll be able to upgrade freetype (needed for a recent gimp). You must also unmerge gimp to install gimpshop... Have a good cofee while you upgrade all this, or perhaps you own an 8 processor box
