I am in the middle of installing amd64 gentoo 2005.0. It has been going smoothly until i tried to emerge --emptytree system then it says that the ARCH is not set then it asks me if Symlink is missing in make.profile. I am sure that i just have to set up the symlink in make.profile but i just dont know how to do this. I was under the impression that the command # ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/defualt-linux/amd64/2005.0/2.4 /etc/make.profile did this for me. Anything would help thanks.

Ok this is a n00b question but i guess i am a n00b. Anyway is it normal after chrooting /mnt/gentoo to /bin/bash for you to loose your ability to reboot your computer with the command 'reboot'. if so, if you get stuck and you have to reboot your computer how would you go ahead and do this without hurting it.

What luck i have. The emerge --emptytree thing just started working randomly without even useing emerge -uv world (I still dont know how this happen.) and in the middle of it downloading we have a power outage. And it is even a beautiful day complete with a clear blue sky. I am starting to think that someone or something does not want me to install gentoo. So in a weird way i guess my problem is solved. well thanks for the help you guys. Lets hope i dont have to come back to these forums for at least a while.

Finally have gentoo installed but now i am having some problems with grub. I think i with be able to take care of this on my own but i am just going to take a break for awhile. It is amazing how installing gentoo just seem to take all the energy out of you or maybe it just makes you stay up late trying to get it to work (12:48am here now). Either way i am going to relax and then go to bed. I will try to get it working tomarrow if anything happens i will post it. Any way thanks for the help and good night.

ok, i'm having this exact same problem.
everything was going smoothly, then i run the command
# emerge --emptytree system
and get "arch is not set" just like the original poster described

i run the code:
# ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile
there are no errors, it nothing pops up or anything (i don't think anything visual is supposed to happen) and then i go back and try to run the emerge command, and it still gives me the same error

i've even tried updating the portage tree to the latest version all over again to see if that made a difference since it was one of the previous steps before the emerge --emptytree system command

nothing i do seems to work..
i tried the emerge -uv world as well with no luck, get the same error message

anybody have any ideas?

ok, tried re-extracting the portage, and just like last time, was positive that i used the "-C" option, so i don't think my portage tree is the problem.

got more info on the error message as i'm not at the computer having the issue.

first part of the error message is the "ARCH is not set"
2nd part is this...
" are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
Is the symlink correct?
Is your portage tree correct? "

there you go... any clue?

ok... i did that, i did the symlink command with the /default-linux/x86 instead of amd64 version. it appears to be working fine now.

HOWEVER, what is the effect of this now? am i still going to have 64bit support now? or is it going to be 32bit???

If you read the section about that command it says that to use it if you didnt get the same thing they got in ls -l /etc/make.conf. if you did then you dont need to use the command. I was just in a hurry the first time through and didnt read it carefully. But now i am having some really annoying problems with grub. Have any of you guys ever gotten the error "end_reqeust: l/0 error, dev fd0, sector 0" right after grub checks you bios. Every time i see it when i try to install grub but like a in the next line it says that no error was reported so i have no idea what is going on. Well at least i have a few ideas i want to try out. Anyway good luck to you rsolberg and no i dont think you have to fear that your compter will no be 32bit because you didnt use that command.

yeah... i started all over (inbetween school classes today).... i also was guilty of trying to rush through the install and didn't pick up on that line in the handbook.

anyways... compiling right now, ...well at least i hope so, it was when i left it. Wish my net connection was a bit faster, but things seem to be going perfectly fine now.
