I was thinking on replacing my Suse 7.1 installation with a Gentoo installation. Which release can I use? I can only find installation CDs for Sparc64 on the mirrors, only the stages are available for Sparc32. Which files do I need?

You cannot use the 2005.0 on 32bit Sparc hardware, but if you read the above post about the release of 2005.0 you will see that there are NEW cd's for the older machines in the experimental section of the download mirrors.

I will find you a link and post back shortly!

Personally I am a convert from SuSE running on both x86 and Sparc, and have found that Gentoo is far better for the job TBH. SuSE dropped support so long ago now that you cannot run production machines with SuSE on sparc any more IMO.

I am trying this iso on an old SPARC SS20 and it keeps failing when I use mke2fs on the SCSI hard drives. It freezes up at:

Code:
Writing sueprblocks and filesystem accounting information:

This system was previously working fine with Debian and Aurora.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE: I got it to work by rebooting using the non-SMP kernel. This is an SMP machine. Could something in the SMP kernel be causing the odd behavior with mke2fs?

I have an SMP SS20.. although its running 2005.0 now.. it started on 2004.2 (IIRC) full install and then upgrade...

I must admit tho.. it bloody took forever !!

I have a funny feeling I had problems with SMP on that one for the install, but once I had compiled my own kernel with SMP and booted from that it was fine.

The SMP kernels in 2.4 are buggy and are prone to causing problems. Some people seem to be able to use them just fine, but others almost always have problems. For installations, I'd highly recommend using a non-SMP kernel and then experimenting later if you can.
