i've never heard of any such problems on Athlon-XP. so far, our feedback on Athlon-XP has been all positive. i'm wondering if a bad ebuild may have crept into the portage tree... but that's just a guess on my part.

if you need to rebuild and you don't want to do the Stage 1/3 thing all over again, i'd recommend using the Jackass! ISO for Athlon-XP.

btw, i'm still interested in getting together if you are.

Hi,

How did you go about fixing this?
I can't figure out how to fix it.

just in case this isn't clear, the Guide was written with the intent that everyone would be installing from the appropriate Gentoo Install CD, not a Knoppix CD. insofar as the Guide was not written with the intent of installing via Knoppix, installing through KNOPPIX is UNSUPPORTED.

First off: Thank you for this comprehensive guide !

Now, recently i've got a Compaq PIII 866mhz on which i'd like to do a stage 1/3 install.
But there's a problem with this pc: It doesn't want to boot off cd when my pci raid controller is plugged in. Only when the controller is disabled in the bios it boots off cd. Stupid, huh ?

The drives on the controller aren't of great importance for the install, they're only storage drives. Will it pose a problem if i do the install without the raid controller, and enable the controller on reboot(and hope the system will boot) ?

Thnx.

*SOLVED*
After succesfull stage 1/3 install (with RAID-controller set to Disabled in system bios) i configured the kernel to include scsi support, rebooted and tadaah..all three disks on the controller where available, eventhough the controller is still disabled in the bios!

So is the moral of the story:

If your an AMD64 user, and you want to do a 1/3 install with little to no hassle, do it on a 2004.3 live disk using the 3.4.3 install guide?

No, the moral of the story is twofold:

1. if you're using a platform for which a Jackass! ISO exists, its a waste of time to perform a Stage 1/3 install.
2. AMD-64 always has been unsupported for Stage 1/3 Installs.

I am getting 404 errors when I try emerge gentoo-sources but I can emerge anything once I am chrooted but as soon as I try to get a 2.6 kernel it goes kaput with the 404's.

Any thoughts on why this is?

Using P3 with Reiser FS.

<solved> Didn't configure my /etc/conf.d/net to reflect dhcp so it wasn't letting me thru.

well, that really was a Gentoo Fundamentals issue, not a Stage 1/3 issue. glad you found the solution.

I'm going to ask the admins to retire this thread in favor of the newer version of the Stage 1/3 Guide for GCC 3.4.4.

The current version of the Stage 1/3 Installation Guide for Gentoo 2005.0 and GCC 3.4.4 is located here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-345229.html

The current Support Thread for the 2005.0 and GCC 3.4.4 version of the Guide is located here:
