kernel panic when computer goes to sleep

Whenever I stop using my computer for a few minutes, my monitor will go black, in sleep mode or whatever, but when I hit a key to wake it up it doesn't wake up and the caps lock and scroll lock buttons start blinking and the computer is totally frozen.
I don't know what's going on, I can't see anything on the screen and there's nothing in the logs. I'm not very experienced so I'm using genkernel with nothing fancy. Please help me diagnose and repair this computer.

did you try swsusp2? i guess you should lern to build kernels with your real needs. especialy when you are diagnosting such problems, you need a kernel as small as possible. therefore you have to know what you realy need static in the kernel (filesystem, ide controler, etc) then you have to try with this small if it works.

some steps i would try:
1. build a kernel without hotplug (usb, firewire, PnP, etc), fb & nvidia/ati dirvers and all the stuff you dont realy need
2. update your bios
3. update your kernel (maybe to 2.6?)
4. try swsups2 (search for it in google, i doesnt have the link here, there is also a howto on gentoo.org awailable)
