ok, I installed X and configured it with xf86config. I also installed flux, and created the necessary directories like ~/.fluxbox/ and ~/.xinitrc with exec /usr/bin/fluxbox in the xinitrc file.

when I ran X
It says, "Fatal IO error, 104"

what does this mean?

Uhhh, the people here are going to wnat more info from ya. What kind of video card do you have and are specific drivers installed? Also /.fluxbox should have been created when you installed fluxbox and try removing the .xinitrc stuff that you added and just use the kdm to launch fluxbox if you have kde installed that is. If you still can't startx after that then you need to reconfigure xfree. Once you can startx that will take you to a really ugly screen with soem terminals in which you can type fluxbox which should start fluxbox for ya, did for me when I was trying to work out the kinks. To get to fluxbox now I use the kdm user login screen.

Ok, here goes

monitor is as follows:

H-sync: 30-69Khz
V-sync: 50-160hz

Micron Monitor, and specs are explicitly defined by manufacturer who emailed me the details.

video card as follows:

Diamond Stealth III S540 AGP

specs are listed here:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/reviews/video/Diamond_S540/Diamond_S540.htm

On another note, when I start X it has NO screen, not just an ugly screen.

I tried looking at the Xfree log file for the error, but it didn't help either.

I am going to try using the RH xfree config file, and see if that works.

Dont use rh's XF86Config file, it uses different style on font sections, i think u better try with "XFree86 -configure" this will generate XF8Config.new file in root folder "/root" have a look at the file and modify the screen section i.e:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection

finally copy the file to /etc/X11/XF86Config
