Hi. I recently finished installing Gentoo from stage3 (Yes I'm wimpy.. ) And then I decided to install Xorg and GNOME. I installed Xorg and went let it do the auto-configuring. It all worked perfectly. Ran the test with X -config /root/stufficantremember. TWM showed up, but had no terminal windows. I thought that odd and ctrl + alt + backspaced back to the command line.
I then made the /etc/x11/ dir and copied the configuration file to it and tried to use startx. Startx fails with fatal errors. Says I don't have framebuffer support.
However... Xorg starts up fine (although no terminal windows show up) when I use the command "X -config /etc/x11/xorg.conf". I find that even odder.
It also doesn't change resolution when I changed that in the config file...
I think there might be a problem with a missing kernel module or something. When I tried emerging the nvidia kernel module, it didn't work. It didn't annihilate my system so I just kept installing.
Before I go off installing GNOME I figure I need to get Xorg working properly. If anyone has any ideas... Please help .
If you need specific output just ask and I'll post it up. |

So TWM worked but had no terminal window(s)? Could you left click to get the TWM menu? Does the xterm (/usr/bin/xterm) binary exist? _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

The X logfile (/var/log/Xorg.0.log or something the like) will probably help you. Maybe it says that couldn't start with the resolution you specified or something... have a look at it. |

i think you need to set your window manager to boot in . xorg seems to be fine if you can log into twm, excpet its not the resolution you desire _________________ Flatland Life is a Choice !

The correct folder is "/etc/X11" (notice the capital X, it's case sensitive)
Installing xorg should've made it already if I remember correctly. |

The capital X in the X11 fixed it. I was reading printed out pages and it's difficult to figure out which Xs are big and which Xs are small.
TWM works fully now and I can open up terminal windows and stuff.
Thanks
The resolution thing is still a little weird though. I'm not sure if it's 1024x768. Didn't really look like it but I'll mess with it when I get home in four hours... |
