Well I've made it this far, but I'm stuck now :).

I set up X with 8 bit colors, and fbdev (framebuffer) and startx seemed fine.

I ran:
Code:
echo "exec gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc

and then startx again. Everything seems fine, but then I start getting errors all over, and Gnome never ends up starting up properly.

Code:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
Using vt 7
(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/local, removing from list!
SESSION_MANAGER=local/hppa1:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1863

** (gnome-session:1863): WArNING **: Host name lookup failure on localhost.

(gnome-panel:1898): Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting

(nautilus:1900): Bonobo-Activation-CRITICAL **: bonobo_activation_activate: assertion 'ac != NULL' failed
xinit:  connection to X server lost

And that's when I killed it. Does anyone have any ideas on this problem?

Thanks in advance!

To update, once I start Gnome I get these errors (same as above just from gnome not xorg)

Code:
Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error (from Bonobo when attempting to register the file manager view server).

and
Code:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in

Upon closing those 2 errors, it just sits at a black screen and does nothing...

Thanks again in advance if anyone can help me out.

What about modifying XSESSION="Gnome" /etc/rc.conf and removing you .xinitrc ?

I'm not a gnome user but this ever worked for me. Btw, I use a matrox card running 16 bit but I don't think your problem is related to the depth.
