@Darckness,
With all my due respect.
I find your recommendations for LDFLAGS, in your "How to be a good Gentoo user", a bit ricey, namely:
Code:

LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--sort-common -s"

In short, unless you wrote the package yourself, then you can play with these in your makefiles. Otherwise, as a consumer, you have no business in messing with the LDFLAGS.
And yeah, don't worry, should the dev deem these advantageous, and your system has these capabilities, she/he will no doubt make the best use of them.

Meh. Ricing to a ridiculous degree is stupid of course, and rice-related bugs don't belong on Gentoo bugzilla, but branding any and all attempts at optimization beyond "march=<...>" as "ricing" is a bit harsh, no? Experimenting is fun, some people enjoy it. Ricing - both cars and computers - is only a hobby. (Except when you rice computers, the worst damage you can do is mess up your computer, rather than kill someone.)
Sure, newbies who don't know what they're doing and get excited about making their system faster will more likely than not learn the hard way why abusing LDFLAGS and the like isn't a good idea. Kill your system once, kill your system twice, third time you learn something. (Heh, that's how I learned to use GNU/Linux. at any rate.)
The only really bad things I see about Gentoo "ricing" are 1) filing subsequent errors to bus.gentoo.org and 2) ricing systems in inappropriate environments (workstation/server). Not so?

Oh, and on a sidenote, everyone knows that 1n5a|\|3 0pt1/\/\1zat10|\|s make your system more secure! The REAL reason things randomly segfault sometimes is because someone is trying to h4x0r j00 and the program shuts down as a precaution! Don't beleive those n00b devs who say it's because your optimizations are unstable, they only want to h4x j00r b0x and slow it down! Kernel panics are especially a lifesafer - they happen when some dev hacks into your b0x and tries to uninstall your ricer-sources, so the kernel starts to panic and shuts down! I think the moderators should start banning people for using leet.

freelight, you might be interested to know that bootstrapping and compiling your own kernel are among the things people tout as a Linux security boost. By bootstrapping and building your own kernel those carefully crafted strings used in buffer overflow attacks are often useless as it's sometimes difficult to guess where in memory something will be. What that means is that stage 1 rules, unless you're a devout kernel hacker, in which case stage 0.5 rocks. And if you're Linus, stage 0 :)

How did I not see this thread sooner? :) Priceless...
OK, to give Darckness another gem:

Why do I suspect I'd also regret posting an explanation of how to override flag filtering here? After all, we only put in flag filtering because we want to keep the top sekrit optimisations to ourselves, not because they're necessary... Hrm, don't think I'll let the cat out of the bag on that one.

ARGH! I keep forgetting all of this stuff. Thanks again ciaranm for not revealing such things! Updating...
I assume ciaranm was referring to placing
Code:
ALLOWED_FLAGS="${CFLAGS} ${CXXFLAGS} ${LDFLAGS}"
in make.conf...
*uses a Reiser4 shield to hide from ciaranm's wrath* ;-)

The POV-Ray benchmark link in the original post ( http://lunar-linux.org/?q=node/view/289 ) is broken. Seems lunar-linux.org got gentoo-forumed :twisted: Any mirrors ?

Now that ciaranm is gone, I find it sort of odd that this "tutorial" still contains so many references to him. :lol:

In other words, we need some other dev to carry on the anti-ricing campaign. Or do we? :wink:

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm glad to have a wonderful free and open OS like Gentoo Linux to tell me what is and isn't my business, and to remind me that I am a mere consumer of free software, not a participant in it... :roll:

He's stating a personal opinion. As far as I know, it's in no way official policy. You can tweak/break your system as much as you like.
What you should not do is post bugs while running a system with insane CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS/LDFLAGS since the amount of wasted time, handling non-bugs, would be intolerable. That is official policy.

In short, use whatever flags you like, but be prepared to rebuild your entire system whenever you run into problems, in order to insure it's not caused by insane flags.

It's not worth it if you ask me.

What about making the cd/dvd drive do lots of exercise, so that it learns to run faster?

To keep your cd/dvd drive in shape, add the following to some startup script:
Code:
for (( x=0 ; x<50 ; x++ )) ; do eject && eject -t ; done

Sorry, but you didn't understand the purpose of this guide. Test platform, huh. What kind of wannabe ricer are you? ;)

Unless you set your use flags to something SO secret and u8er l33t that it melts your CPU, setting fire to the carpet and dousing the house's inhabitants in a raging inferno.

....I have developed such a use flag. Email me. And use at your own risk.
