Two things you can do.

1. buy another nic for the desktop and set it up so that the laptop runs through the desktop
2. buy a switch and plug them both into the switch and the switch into the modem

I would recommend 2 you can get some good switches (preferably hubs) which come with firewalls from linksys. Best of all linksys products run linux joy :)

if that was confusing you might google home networking tutorial and see what you get but if you get the right hardware there wont be much to do but plug everything in the right places

Let's see if I understand this correctly

1) The desktop machine is connected to the internet using a USB cable modem.

2) The desktop machine also has a NIC that is not currently in use

3) The laptop has a NIC that is not currently in use.

If you connect the two NICs and play around with iptables you should be able to connect with the laptop to the internet through the desktop machine.

If that is the case and you do have an additional network card in the desktop then you bought the wrong kind of cable. Regular ethernet cable will not work. For machine to machine connections you need a crossover cable (if I remember the term correctly) basically two of the wires are switched.

The forums arent really the place for this.
The first result when I google for linux bridge is

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Bridge+Firewall.html

That should be a decent place to start unless you have more specific problems there isnt much anyone can do to help.
