If I use the new nvidia driver (1.0.7167-r1) and open in konqueror 3.4.0_rc1 the sites www.kde-look.org or www.kde-apps.org then X hangs. After I downgrade to version 1.0.6629 everything works. It also works in firefox even with the new driver. It must be a problem with the new konqueror and the new nvidia driver. Btw I'm using kernel 2.6.11-gentoo-r3.

did you run
Code:
opengl-update nvidia

Yes, everything works even the opengl-apps. Only the konqueror hangs (or better X) when I visit this 2 sites. And this only with the new driver.

It can be but it only occurs with the driver-change to the new version.

I have the same issue with konqueror 3.3.2, however not all of the time if I use a KDE session.
If I run Evilwm then X hangs (taking all CPU) hard when starting konqueror. Nothing works, I can't CTRL+ALT+F1 nor CTRL+ALT+Backspace, no user input but mouse movements work.
I can remotely kill -9 X.

I have had a hang with MythTV aswell, however I can't provide more information on that.

No usefull info, I know, but I just wanted to let ChL@Gentoo know that he's not alone

it seems to me that you guys still have some previous kde libs and with the new one they probably get in conflict, try completly removing all kde libs and reinstaling again and then emerging konqueror again , or you can simply try to emerge konqueror with simplyer USE just in case .... give it a try ...

I can agree on the use of simpler USE flags and perhpas less CFLAGS aswell.
My system was bootstraped two weeks ago, so no old kdelibs hanging around

I'm downgrading nvidia-kernel.

Mascanho; Thank you anyway for your time!

It's ok. Thank you for your try. :)
I will compile KDE 3.4 final (which is on the kde mirrors) and wait for a new nvidia-driver. Now I can use the "old" one.

I didn't find any new release. And the version 1.0.7167-r1 causes the trouble.

The updated nvidia-driver (7617-r1) looks bad. I've been getting regular lockups (need to ssh in to recover) since upgrading. Usually it happens when using firefox, but has happened with other applications too.

The giveaway is the last message (in /var/log/everything/current) when lockups occur:
Code:
Mar 18 12:50:48 [kernel] NVRM: Xid: 13, 0000 02005600 00000056 00000c28 01be0078 00000080

I'm downgrading to the 6629 drivers (which worked flawless for me) and fully expecting the problems to go away.

I would recommend that you simply downgrade to the drivers that worked if updating to kde 3.4 doesn't change anything. The chances are that if it isn't konqueror's fault (should be though, if it's only happeneing on those two sites and with that browser), you've found some very unique and very strange hardware-related bug.

You could try just using firefox from now on, but being a kde user you wouldn't want to do that ;).

I suspect it has to do with the overlay support. I disabled 'renderaccel' in my xorg.conf and konqueror starts up and runs fine. Otherwise, it's a hard lock the second I start it and the window appears. I guess we wait for a patch from xorg/nvidia.

Not that unique I'm afraid. I have the same error.

Code:
 [kernel] [72478.425467] NVRM: XID: 13, 0002 beef5601 00001796 00000208 081c43b0 00000002

beef??? is it telling me not to have a cow.... or is it having one I wonder?
Wow, my wit is about as sharp as a sack of hammers today. Anywho...

Xorg seems fine, but as soon as kde gets to the splash image X locks up. I have found that I can prevent this by switching to another console, then switching back after kde loads up. But it no longer works right, The window decorations in perticauler are fubar (crystalgl). This just screems to me nvidia drivers, most notably since the same setup worked previously 8)

This is on a geforce 4 460 go with kernel 2.6.11-mm4 and kde 3.4.0.

same problem here. It's happened on two machines while running the 2.6.11.3 vanilla kernel and the newest nvidia-kernel. Lock occurs with either firefox or konq.

SSh'ing in, killing X, and restarting xdm (gdm/kdm) fixes it.

Great! I have reverted back to the old nvidia drivers, and am still reciving the error.
Reverted back to an old kernel with old drivers... didn't see the error, but it still failed in the same way...
I am finding the following error in my .xsession-errors

Code:
QSettings: failed to open file '/usr/qt/3/etc/settings/qt_plugins_3.3rc'

and
Code:
kdecore (klibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so: undefined symbol: init_kdnssd

I am begining to think that our error is purely informational, and not fatal.

Update: Well fixing the permission problem with the first one did not help.

If you aren't using KDE, you may find it helpful to add "kdeinit &" to your ~/.xinitrc.

i have the same thing:
Code:
Jul 19 18:06:35 system NVRM: Xid: 13, 0000 02005600 00001796 00000dfc 00000000 00000080

Now it seems fixed (i very hope so) by changing a line in my xorg.conf:
disable this line
Code:
Option      "RenderAccel"       "true"

didn't have it since i disable it.
Hope it help you out, and i also hope the next nvidia-kernel has a fix for this.
