It's not out yet. ;)

The tarballs haven't been released. I'm still happy with beta2 and won't bother to upgrade to 3.4.0 until it's x86 stable.

3.4 is in tagged in the CVS, so you can get the final version now. The KDE people need to type up the announcement and package it up and all. So, it is out, but not officially.

The packages are still masked, so it will be a bit before they even make it to the unstable branch. There are a lot of ebuilds for the split kde build, so that is a lot of stuff that needs to be entered in the package.keywords file if you want to use that.

How do I emerge this? I took the lines out of package.mask, but emerge can't find the tarballs (because they don't exist yet). How do I tell it to emerge this from CVS?

I did an emerge sync now and saw that the ebuilds for 3.4.0 are already in portage, only that there are no packages to download yet from the kde mirrors. 8)
BTW, I see that all 3.4.0_rc1 packages I have installed would be upgraded to the 3.4.0 final packages. Have they really all changed? Isn't it that the latest rc before the final version should be almost identical to it?

The ebuilds are for kde developers for testing before they relase kde 3.4.0.
Release plan says that kde 3.4.0 will be relased on 16th march

You can find the tarballs here : http://ftp.pl.debian.org/PLD/software/kde/

I guess they are made from the CVS version, and they seems to compile fine for the moment

Will the split ebuilds become mandatory with 3.4.0 or will there be monolithic ebuilds as well? There are no monolithic ebuilds yet (except for arts and kdelibs), so I guess we'll just have to wait. Or?

There will be mono ebuilds, but with a different naming (kdebase-meta as opposed to kdebase earlier). But this is the last version which will have mono-ebuilds. :(

I always thought the *-meta-ebuilds were just a "container" that had all the associated split ebuilds as a dependency. But I think we will see clear when kde 3.4 *really* is out. The current subject seems to be a bit premature...

Yes, that's true. That makes them monolithic ebuilds - when you pull it in, its dependent ebuilds get emerged too.

I do not reckon that the mono ebuild names will revert to the old ones. Not when we've been through a beta, a release candidate and a full version is expected to be out within a week.

You thought right, they are like a "container" which depends on the split ones.

Quite unusual, that these ebuilds are already in portage, before the tarballs get available. The last 'emerge sync' changed two entries in my package.keywords due to package changes (kde-base/kdebase-pics & kde-base/kdebase-applnk became kde-base/kdebase-data), and I already unmerged those two packages (since they are blockers for kdebase-data), before I saw, that the tarballs are not available yet... :?

The old ebuilds are already gone now, which mean I probably should not reboot that machine until the upgrade finally can be done.

Can someone help me out. I jsut installed a fresh version of 2004.3 last night on my nforce3/3500/6800gt system and am stuck between kde's. I dont want to emerge rc1 if the final is right around the corner but I also dont want to wait to get the box finished. Can someone describe the process of getting the final version from CVS? Much thanks.

You can get the tarballs from the link I provided earlier

Ok, for those, who were the same way too fast in trying to upgrade, by unmering the mentioned blockers: This can be fixed by
Code:
emerge kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.0_rc1-r1 -1

The kde-i18n-ebuild don't seem to be updated - or does it only happen to me?

It isn't updated yet, but the i18n ebuild is always a little yet (it wasn't even created for the rc1

I was wondering if I could simply rename the ebuild from beta2 to 3.4.0. I just downloaded the i18n-source-thing... I'm going to try that now :)

Didn't work for the rc1 (I think that's why it wasn't in the tree)

I've eard the 3.4.0 i18n are trickier to build since rc1

Yeah. I tried it... always tries downloading different language-files...

So I'll give up (yes, this fast) and going to build the english kde3.4.0. I think i18n will come on 16th.
