Hi folks

I've managed to get the 2.4.29 kernel installed and running on a dual processor dog of a sparc, but it's having funny issues (freezes for periods of time for up to 2 minutes every 4-5mins or so). I've not seen this before so I decided that I'd just go ahead and build a 2.6 kernel.

I've managed to actually get the kernel built but it fails the boot everytime. I've tried manually building the kernel and using Genkernel, both times I've come out with the same results but I think it's down to my silo config and the machine not finding the root path.

My silo looks like this: (image is kernel-2.4.29)
Code:

partition = 1
root = /dev/sda1
timeout = 50
default = Gentoo

image = /boot/image
        label = Gentoo

image = /boot/kernel-2.6.5
        label = Gentoo265
        root = /dev/sda4

Interestingly, sda1 is the /boot partition and sda4 is technically /. I've tried using sda1 as well.

The error message I currently get from the 2.6 kernel is this:

Code:

esp0:  data bad parity detected.
esp0:  Resetting scsi bus
esp0:  SCSI bus reset interrupt
scsi:  Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
SCSI error : <0 0 0 0> return code = 0x2
end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 2000162
EXT3-fs:  unable to read superblock
VFS:  Cannot open root device "sda4" or sda4
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic:  VFS:  Unable to mount root fs on sda4
  <0>Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

Any great ideas?

Hrm, well, SCSI parity errors are *bad* things to have... I bet the reason your 2.4.29 kernel freezes every few minutes is because the SCSI bus is throwing parity errors during disk activity. The 2.6 kernel seems to trigger this every time, before boot, so it gives up on that device which is unfortunately the disk with your root fs.

Check your SCSI termination settings.

Not to high jack thread..
When did genkernel become viable for Sparc ultra 1?
I thought you had to build Kernel with menuconfig for sparcs 8O :oops:
