Well its been a long time since I could confess to having a perfect Linux system, ever since the upgrade to 1.4_rc1 Ive been having to use konqueror for my Internet Banking (which is undesirable).

But now (today) i have emerged mozilla 1.3a and the sun-j2sdk package and it works. No need for anything else, it just works. Straight from portage.

BTW: This didnt happen for mozilla 1.2.1 which is what I have moved up from.

It also seems Mozilla 1.3a is much faster than the previous versions, anyone else think so?

Hi!
Did you use the masked ebuild in portage for mozilla-1.3a? Did you compile it with gtk2 or not?

Thanks for the info

I used the masked ebuild, yes.
But no i did not compile with GTK2.

Am wondering if I should recompile with gtk2 too see what is better.
I did try 1.2.1 with gtk2 before moving to 1.3a but that seemed to make the fonts on the quicklinks bar rediculously small, and the settings would not stay. I could change my homepage, but it would go back to being mozilla start.
(that is probably just config files, as I have it all working using the same files modded slightly under 1.3a)

Thanks for your quick reply. That saves me a lot of work. Do you happen to know if galeon (cvs) compiles against mozilla-1.3a? I failed the last time I tried (a week ago or so). As I use galeon most of the time, I needed a version of mozilla+gtk2+xft2 that I would compile galeon against. If you get java working in moz-1.3a+gtk2, please let me know beforeI go through the struggle of recompiling things on my small notebook 333 Mhz. It takes *AGES* to get mozilla compiled on this thing, and I wish I had a faster machine to get it compiled on.

Anyways, I'll be greatfull for your feedback, if you go throught the struggle to recompile moz-1.3a+gtk2 and java.

regards,

OK as I wont lose anything (I can always just recompile) Im going to emerge mozilla again, with gtk2. Which on my XP 2000+ will take a little bit of time still.

I will post results when done.

I cant speak for Galeon, as I havent ever used it, but mozilla is darn fast right now, it loads all pages faster than IE does, and is quite comfortably going through the forums with no delays.

As an interesting side note, it seems you no longer need to specify the WANT gtk2 option with mozilla.

Just issued
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" USE="gtk2" emerge net-www/mozilla/mozilla-1.3a.ebuild

and off she went, compiling quite nicely right now.

I just WISH my internet banking was browser-dependent. My lovely bank thought it was smart to use Microsoft JAVA code instead of real (SUN) JAVA code. So my internet banking works up to the moment you provide a security code for confirming transactions. But then when you click confirm, it says JAVA wasn't loaded correctly. Funny thing is, if JAVA wasn't loaded correctly, I wouldn't even be able to login to the damn site. :(

Aaanyway, I'm way off topic. :)

Good to hear someone tried Mozilla 1.3a. I'm using 1.2.1 with everything working (Flash, JAVA), which is YAY! Took a bit of work, indeed.

Well I just got up again, and mozilla has finished compiling.

The GTK2 support is just as good as just straight gtk. There are more font supports so the fonts are smaller again, but its still looks rather decent.

The other all important item. JAVA still works, from scripts to applets, to VM required stuff. Looks like this is a winning release in my eyes.

The only thing that seems to be missing is theme support.

To the best of my knowledge there are 3 themes (plus the defaults) for 1.3a so does anyone have anything that might work. I am reading the skin howto currently so will look at making my own, but would be interested in testing others aswell.

Yay for JAVA. Let's hope I have similar results. :) Will let you know when it's compiled.

What was the error it gave?
Which package were you compiling?

I typed

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -u net-www/mozilla/mozilla-1.3a.ebuild

I don't remember the exact error message, but it was along the lines of 'package corrupt or not complete'

Sounds like the actual package download was corrupt.

What happens if you remove /usr/portage/distfiles/mozilla-source-1.3a.tar.gz and then redo the emerge?

Honestly I have no idea on galeon.

But by the looks of it it may even just be a CVS version error. Can you try emerging one of the older releases or a newer complete cvs version?

There is only one galeon-cvs ebuild... it is in /usr/portage/net-www/galeon-cvs... and from what i gather... when i emerge galeon-cvs... it gets the updates to the latest cvs... so i think it's up to the galeon developers... to make galeon-cvs work with mozilla 1.3a... so i'll just wait until galeon-cvs works with that version of mozilla..

Is there any reason why you must use the cvs edition?

Could you test the actual galeon edition in the portage tree and see what results it has?

Well the reason i like using galeon-cvs... is that it uses gtk2... and i like the look and feel of that version of galeon... i'm not sure if the latest stable version (1.2.7) can use gtk2..

Ne ways... i believe that galeon-cvs requires a gtk2 enabled mozilla... so i'll just wait until galeon-cvs can work with mozilla 1.3a or later..

I got rid of this error when I used the option
Code:
 --with-mozilla-snapshot=trunk
to configure. But then I still didn't get it compiled, it was a week ago or so, I haven't tried the latest galeon-cvs. Try with this option and tell me what you get.

Tnx for your feedback.

That is some good news. I got mozilla-1.3a compiled last night. Tonight I'll hit sun-j2sdk ( Iguess That is the one you used!). Thanks a lot for the feedback. One more thing: Can you tell me the steps you used to compile sun-j2sdk? Did you have to uninstall openmotif (if you had it installed)...

Regards,

I did umerge openmotif yes.
Code:
 emerge umerge openmotif dev-java/blackdown*
emerge dev-java/sun-jdk

That will make sure you have a running sun java environment for the compile, as some libs require a java compilers... *shrug* bit of catch 22
Code:
emerge dev-java/sun-j2sdk

And that was it. It works :D

You can then remerge openmotif if you wish., i havent bothered yet abd im not missing it.,

For anyone that might not update frequently, I had to update pango to version 1.2 to get moz 1.3a to compile with xft2 support. Even though the compile was successful, mozilla wouldn't start (no errors, just returned to prompt). I upgraded gtk+ (to 2.2) along with glib (which I think wanted a downgrade). Mozilla started after this. I have to fix some ugly fonts still (File, Edit, View menu / tab font / toolbar font). Seems like I've seen a thread with the same font problem.
