Advertised: 1Mb down / 15KB up
Real world: 3-4Mb down / 15 KB up
For 16 canuck bucks because we're on a governement program to hook up families to the net. Otherwise it would be ~30-35$. Until the tech (cable, not net) went on a strike we have a 6 GB cap. You guys have no idea how much I downloaded all those months.
For some reason however it seems to be fast only for the web, everything else is quit slow. Downloading stuff off the www averages at 370KB/s (almost 4Mb) but filesharing apps at ~1KB to 100KB but usually near 1KB. Since emerge uses a ww or ftp server downloading stuff is always fast so Gentoo is great on this.
BTW, even when the modem was hooked up directly to the computer which would be turned off at night i'd keep the same IP for more than a month. Now that I have a router I don't even count.
However, those cheap bastards only allow one e-mail account and I don't have it so I'm stuck with webmail again. _________________ "Is this type of thing going to happen every time we switch to improbability drive?" "Very probably I'm afraid." |

Ack! I just downgraded my internet speed. Was: 1.5Mb. Now: 256k (down). Upload remains at 256k.
All this to satisfy my roomies and save $20/month. It's already noticable with the loading of the forums..... of course, I'm streaming internet radio at the same time
I guess us college kids have to save money somewhere. Less money towards internet == more beer money. Fair trade, i s'pose. |

I'm paying $40k a year...oh, but I get college out of that, too, huh?
Dual T3s - that's what, 90 megabits?
Static IP, no blocked ports, all the rest.
At home, it's around $50 a month for 1mbit down, and 256 (I think) up.

I've got 900K ADSL, no download/upload limits. $29/mo introductory rate, goes up to $49/mo after 3 months.
If I want POTS (plain old telephone service) access I have to pay an ISP around $15-20 per month plus I have to pay for unlimited local calling on my phone ($33 per month) - and if I want to use the phone while I'm on the net, I need another phone line (another $5-$33/month). With ADSL I can use the phone while on the net. I don't make that many local calls, so I get the cheapest phone service ($5/month). I'm saving money by using broadband, not even factoring in the time savings.
No wonder high speed access is really taking off here. Sucks to be a mom and pop ISP business in the US, though. |

I pay around 35-40$ for a 256/128 Kbit ADSL! To expensive - I know, but that's the price in Denmark.. But I've got no ratio limits, a router and the possibility of a permanent IP (for no extra cost). |

Seems that the best deal going on down under is something to the lines of 8G down on peak (8am - midnight) and 8G down off peak (the rest ) which goes for 85 a month at 512/128kbps -- but you have to pay for uploads.
An extra 10 a month cuts out upload costs so uploads are free.
16Gig a month for the same cost I pay now.... hmmm wonder what Ill be doing come the end of my initial sign-up contract ???? |

Again, none of the above.
In my ten years online, I have never paid for Internet access once. No word of a lie.

$41.99/month for the shitty New Jersey Comcast @Home Cable Internet.
1.5Mbit Downstream/160Kbit Upstream
Shitty, huh?
I also have a router (Comcast wants an extra $20-$30/PC for more IP addresses...rip-off) and a switch. The modem is by my PC, which the modem is on my router, which the router is on the switch upstairs. |

A$74.95 for my (Optus) cable connection. That's about US$43 at current exchange rates.
Down: Don't really know, just that it's fast enough that I've never bothered to look further.
Up: Slow, but that doesn't matter to me. 64Kbps I think.
Limit: Am supposed to be on a 3gig/month limit, but for some obscure reason I'm still on the old system. This is an obscure rubbery limit working on the basis that you'll get chopped off if you consistently (14 consecutive days???) exceed 10 times the average user's download. The documentation on this limit, and how it actually works, don't seem to have much in common. Hasn't been a problem to me until the last month, when they insisted I was at 9.1 times, and the log showed significant downloads on days the system hadn't even been powered on. Hmmm! |

I'm in a similar boat, $27000 tuition, $5000 room and internet
We have 2 OC3's to campus (150Mbit/sec each) and 10Mbit into each room, less you live in the Quad, then you get 100Mbit full duplex into room (kind of funny to see people downloading at over 4 MB/sec).
MacMasta, where do you go that they don't block ports? RIT?
We only have port 80 or anything over 1024 available to us, which kind of stinks, but also speeds everything legit up some, so fair trade off I think. Granted I just wanted to run a dns server and they got mad at me
At home my family has 768k down and 256k up, $60 a month. Their dsl lines are on private ips though so no running servers |

I really pay approximately 160 Euro a month for my internet connection, with 256/256Kbit/s with 8 static IPs (/29 subnet).
While the static and very own subnet is more than lovely the price lets me really getting sick each month I have to pay esp. because on other countries (than germany) you get such connectioni much much cheaper.
