PostPosted: Mon Mar 07, 2005 1:40 am    Post subject: Gnome Start Menu Issue Reply with quote

Hi

I had added some applications to Gnome start menu. But yesterday when I updated to latest verion of GTK, the applications' icons are not shown on the start menu. But when I run applications:// from Gnome, they added application are there.

I even tried to readd all of them on root but I have the same problem

Any suggestions please

Thanks

There have been several threads (and bugs) about this subject. Try updating gnome-panel to gnome-panel-2.8.3 and glib to glib-2.6.2-r1. One of these 2 is most likely the culprit.

Sorry, 2.8.3 is ~

You can emerge it like this:

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORD="~86" emerge gnome-panel

I've been using a whole load of different searches to find out how to fix this bug and I stumbled across this thread.

emerging gnome-panel 2.8.3 fixed it.

hmmmmm, when was the last time you ran "emerge sync"?

Does this file exist?

Code:
/usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome-panel/gnome-panel-2.8.3.ebuild

If not then you need to emerge sync and if it does then just emerge it like this (you should never have to do this but if it's the only way to make it work  ).

Code:
emerge /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome-panel/gnome-panel-2.8.3.ebuild

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome-panel

i have more basic question, if one of you could answer it on-the-fly? How do i change/edit the Gnome startmenu?

Oh My Fucking $DIETY!!!! I can't believe I missed that. TWICE!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well.

The menu items are all stored as .desktop files in /usr/share/applications. Just open one and use it as a template to create custom menu items.

never mind curtis, i just kept a close look on the syntax because i myself spent some time in vain just because i missed the spelling.
Concerning my gnome i found applications:/// (ah i tried the search function ;) ) but it's crap .. i knew i shouldn't have installed Gnome in the first place

I'll try that gnome-panel "unstable" also, since i a) changed things using nautilus => applications:/// but although i restarted gnome, the startmenu didn't change although it should have. Damn stuff this is.

Is there any chance of getting a fix for this issue into stable any time soon? It seems to have been around a while!

No, foser (the gentoo package maintainer for Gnome) has said in several bug reports that this is an upstream issue and that the new menu system fixes all the problems so no fixing of back versions will happen. You will either have to upgrade to gnome 2.10 or live with it. Of course things may change at any time so don't give up hope. One of us might get sick of it and submit a fix. I use 2.10 so I'm OK with it.

Oh i c. I'm not sure I'm ready to move to 2.10 yet, I'm using it on another system and haven't decided whether the pros outweigh the cons ;)

But I can take the effort of moving to 2.8.3, that will be fine.

thanks for the info!

Since doing this I am having another problem: when I open xmms from the menu, and click (with either mouse button) on the xmms window, it closes. If I open it from a terminal (with the same command as is in the menu), the problem does not occur.

Does anyone know what might cause this problem?

thanks, Matt

I don't know if upgrading to 2.10 would fix it because if the icons are missing then, you won't have a menu editor to use to try to fix it lol.

There isn't a menu editor in any of the 2.x series of gnome anyway. The 2.10 series uses the new freedesktop.org standard for menus. All the menu entires are in /usr/share/applications and are easily edited or added to with any text editor. No more fooling around with gnome-vfs.

ARGH! Bad Gentooer! No cookie for you! :x
You should use the /etc/portage/package.* files instead of things like ACCEPT_KEYWORDS and USE on the command-line. You should read the portage or emerge man pages for more information.

I know codergeek. I did say it wasn't the correct way to do it but it would still work.

OK this problem is probably not caused by gnome-panel after all. I will look elsewhere :)
