I've installed alsa (following the alsa installation guide). Had some initial problems, but editting a running a script on these forums seems to have solved most of those. I'm able to play and mp3 using mpg321, etc. However, I get the following when I run modules-update:
Code:
root@bluemax root # modules-update
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/ad1889.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/ali5455.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/forte.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/maestro3.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/sound/ymfpci.o

and on boot up and when I run modprobe snd-emu10k1 I get:
Code:
root@bluemax root # modprobe snd-emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.28-gentoo-r7/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed

Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this? THe advice I found by searching these forums seems to be to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel - do I really need to do that just to fix this problem?

If you are using a desktop PC my advice is to move on to 2.6.
If you don't and that's a network server (guess not, at least don't see why you need the sound for it) stick with 2.4 for a while longer.

OK - thanks - I'll look into upgrading. Still, everything works ok (I emerged mplayer last night and that was fine) - I just get the messages in boot up.
