I followed this guide.. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/2005.0-upgrade-amd64.xml and got to the part where I do "make -f Makefile-profile_update-2005.0"

It was emerging linux-headers-2.6 and I got this error

Quote:
>>> Source unpacked.
make[1]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r4/work/linux-2.6.8.1'/bin/sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching ``'
/bin/sh: -c: line 2: syntax error: unexpected end of file
make[2]: *** [scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 2
make[1]: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r4/work/linux-2.6.8.1'

!!! ERROR: sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r4 failed.
!!! Function compile_headers, Line 240, Exitcode 2
!!! defconfig failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

make: *** [step2] Error 1

I really haven't any clue on how to fix this and I've looked around, any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

**Edit** Since I haven't finished the upgrade portage stopped working

Look, I LOVE Gentoo, but ever since 2004.3, I have had misgivings.

It seems that the ususal
Code:
# emerge sync
# emerge system
# emerge world

just doesn't work anymore, even without USE="~arch".

In "The Good Old Days™" I USEd "~arch", and ran the above, like every week. For no good reason. And it worked.

I had a friend that just cron jobbed it. He was using "~arch" too.

Now, I know there are "reasons," real and valid reasons, but I am just seeing too many of these posts.

It used to be, there was a good guide when anything major came up.

I suggest using 2004.2 livecd for new installs and making a stable system with that.

I wish you luck getting that going.

These days, I haven't found solid, common answers, but rather I have tried bits of all of them to come up with solutions.

Sincerely,
One Who Still Loves Gentoo, and WON'T leave.

Its been completely stable on 2004.3, but I couldn't emerge wine and I like messing with things so I decided to upgrade to 2005.0.

Fixed by doing it manually...
Quote:

# emerge unmerge linux26-headers
# emerge -v --oneshot '>=linux-headers-2.6.8.1-r4'

Yes I was advised that the "fast, easy way" is not as reliable.

I managed to screw it all up now, glibc failed during the compile and now NOTHING works, it gives me a weird error with undechipherable characters and now I think I'm pretty much boned. Gonna try stage1 install again, only from the start go to 2005.0
