Hi.
I have compiled kernel-2.5.53,54 successfully.
I'm now trying to start my development kernels. I have previously used 3 kernel-2.4.19 with different configurations.
Have some framebuffer-problems with my ATI RAGE 128 card, but framebuffer support can be disabled.
I need module-init-tools, and the newest version available is 0.9.7.
How is it when I want to load kerne-2.4 after a kernel-2.5.53 session?
Do I have to unmerge module-init-tools and then emerge modutils? Or is module-init-tools backward compatible with kernel-2.4? This seems to be a lot of work if I'm changing the running kernel often.....
How does module-init-tools work versus modutils?
Cheers,

|

Hi.
I've managed to compile kernel-2.5.55 and have installed module-init-tools-0.9.7, but still I can't boot the kernel.
Yes, module-init-tools-0.9.7 IS backward compatible with kernel-2.4. Tried it out yesterday....Was feeling lucky, but not lucky enough, though.
I'm using pretty much the same configuration in kernel-2.5.55 as in kernel-2.4.19-gentoo.
I have tried to:
1. Disable all framebuffer devices, but with no luck.
2. Tried to disable ext2 support, since I am using ext3 in /.
3. Compile no modules which caused a large bzImage, 1.44 MB
4. Compile with modules.
I am starting to believe it's PCI detection that is failing.....the patch of Rusty has not been applied to my development kernel.....may be it this which is giving me a hard time?
Can klogd, syslogd cause an error? That's strange, because these processes are not started...so to speak.
It's rather strange that I can't start my development kernel...
Is there anybody with a working configuration? Of course it is.
Cheers,
Ole |

Ole,
Did you check the kernel logs after a failed boot to see where it actually stopped?
If you wanna tinker around with it, try to look at the Kernel Debug options in the kernel config.
I'm not surprised that a development kernel is not booting. I have been using development kernels since Linux 0.91 and know all about the problems you may face.

Yes, the module-init-tools ebuild dos have backwards compatability for the 2.4 kernel. |
