|
|
I want to build a new PC with Gentoo as my OS. I am currently using 32bit gentoo and it works like a charm.
My new PC will be running off a 64 bit Processor. I have come across a lot of post in this forum about people having more than enough problems with 64 bit processors and gentoo. Should I stay away from the 64bit proc and build a 32bit pc for my new pc? or is the 64 bit route okay for me?
The 2 64bit processors I'll be choosing from are:
1) AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+
2) Intel Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz
Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

A lot of those posts are outdated. Currently amd64 is very well supported.
There may be some programs that aren't ready, but the majority of them work fine and the average users shouldn't have much of an issue. You will have to run a 32 bit browser and mplayer for some 32 bit only codecs and plugins, but nothing you can do about that on any OS right now.
I guess that answers the second question, go amd.
There are a ton of threads on this already, maybe search and read them instead of starting the exact same one again. |
