As a (perhaps soon to be former) Debian user I was hoping to find a .config kernel configuration file that should work as a starting point. In Debian we hide this in a subdirectory of our kernel-sources package.

The kernel that boots the install disk for instance works great... where is the .config that made that one?

a default config is copied over in the event one does not current exist in /usr/src/linux. Default is, surprisingly, named defconfig and located in the architecture specific directory tree. E.g., for i386 compatible platforms, it is /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/defconfig.

If you simply "make menuconfig" then the .config file would have been created, you could have then just exited the "make menuconfig" script, saving or not-saving the created .config file.
