Ok what is your sound card? Do you have ALSA_CARDS="chipset" in make.conf? Do you have the right kernel option enabled for your sound card? Do you have alsa-oss emerged?

Okay

Soundcard: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97]

1. just add ALSA_CARDS="ES1371" to make.conf
2. just emerge alsa-driver (been trying emerge oss-driver  )
3.

kernel:
Code:

<*> Open Sound System (DEPRECATED)
   .
   .
   .
   <*> Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1370)
   <*> Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI 97 (ES1371)
<*> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
   <*> Sequencer support
      <*> Sequencer dummy client
   <*> OSS Mixer API
<*> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
   [*] OSS Sequencer API
   [*] Verbose pri

PCI devices
<*> (Creative) Ensoniq Audio PCI 97

let me do a make and reboot my computer and see what happen.

thanks
